Help!
I am running Windows XP and a new 4G 20gig iPod. On thursday, I installed the updater (4-28) for a 20gig 3G ipod. Everything went smoothly and I was listening to music later that day. However, I exchanged it for a 4G, uninstalled the original software, reinstalled the new one with 7-15 updater. Everytime I try to restore the settings my computer freezes. It started restoring it once, then crashed and now the iPod has the folder icon. Everytime I connect and try to use the updater, it crashes! Help!
Shocker

OK, I just tried putting it in disk mode and running the updater. I didn't crash but it did not restore. Instead it gave me this message: "Firmware update failure. Disk write error"
Help!

I just bought a 4G 20GB as well, you have to install the software off the CD, do not download that newer updater. It has numerous glitches.
The problem here is that, I'm running a Belkin FireWire card that was supposedly designed for the iPod, the multiple 3Gs I uploaded to went fine until now. My 4G will not connect at all via FiWi and it will immediately freeze my PC, Task Manager can't even help me on this one. I'm forced to use the slower USB2.0 which also slows down everything else I'm doing on my PC. Funny thing is I'm running a 2.52 P4 512 MB RAM Dell Box. :( Apple takes one step ahead (battery life), and one backward (compatibility). I'm extremely disappointed.

I had similar problems, this worked for me:
Sounds like something is interfering with the communication between the computer and the iPod. Perhaps an anti-virus or automatic back-up program is trying to access the iPod, seeing it as a hard drive that needs to be scanned. Disable any programs that may be trying to access the iPod. If you don't know how to, try right clicking on the icon in the system tray (typically in the lower righthand corner of the screen).
Then try this:
Unplug iPod from computer,
If you can, reset the iPod (4G iPods is the menu and center buttons held simultaneously for about six seconds I believe). If you can't reset it, don't worry.
Reinstall iPod Software on computer
When it asks you if you want to configure your iPod now, plug in the iPod and select OK. It may take a minute or two for the computer to 'find' the iPod.
Once the software is done installing, the iPod will show the 'apple', unplug the iPod from the computer immediately.
If it asks you if you want to restore the iPod, select 'no' for now.
Flash the iPod by plugging it into the wall
Restart the computer. Remember to disable the anti-virus or backup software (or whatever was interfering with the iPod) again.
Open the iPod updater (Start-> All Programs-> iPod-> iPod Updater -> iPod Updater)
Reconnect iPod
Select Restore
Once restored, the iPod will either flash itself (look for the picture of the electrical outlet followed by a progress bar) or you will need to flash it manually by removing it from the computer and plugging it into the wall.
You probably don't need to restart the computer again, but I would. Remember to disable the anti-virus or backup software (or whatever was interfering with the iPod) again.
Your iPod is hopefully working properly. You will need to disable the interfering program(s) everytime you connect your iPod. Good Luck.
