Ive read most of the reviews of cases on this site but im still confused on which case to buy. I need a case that is cheap but still provides good protection from scratches and lets me access the controls on the ipod, it doesnt need to be the most fashionable case.

I just got an iSkin evo (Ghost) as a replacement for my DLO Action Jacket. Of the two cases I've owned I would recommend the iSkin. It's decent for everyday use and the screen protector is awesome. If you're interested in button protection look into Lajo's cases (I haven't used one or owned one but they seem to have a faithful following). Just read the reviews and find the case that works for you.
