I've read that when you connect the iPod to your computer, it automatically updates the playlists/content. I have a computer with a small hard drive and I was wondering if I had to keep all the songs that I want on my iPod also on my computer so that they don't get erased during the "updating" once I reconnect. I'd like to just rip cd's, transfer the songs to my iPod, and then delete them from my computer. is that possible? Thanks in advance for any help

Yes, you can do it. You just need to set your prefs to manage songs and playlists manually.

First off, since this is in the windows section I'm going to assume you have a PC. Well, don't worry about the playcount feature. Apple chose not to enable it on WiPods. So, we can't take advantage of it (sadly).

Regarding keeping only one copy of your tunes on the iPod, just make sure you back them up somewhere else. The iPod, as a portable media device, is not to be trusted as your single source for your data.

Thanx for the help---one more question...I'd like to get an iPod as soon as possible, but I've heard that in an effort to deter "music stealing", the iPod will only recognize the one computer it is initially connected with. I'm at home on the family computer now, and I was hoping to load some tunes from here and then take it down to school with me and continue on my own computer. is there a trick to allow this?

I use iPod exactly in the way you described. I rip CD, write in iPod, and delete from computer. I have the original CD, so I do not worry about backup copy.

There's nothing about the iPod that prevents it from being used on more than one computer. That's basically bunk. Just make sure that you don't sync w/the second computer or you could end up deleting your songs.

It will depend on which software program you use to upload on how hard it is to make this mistake.

hello ashawley,

I know this question clearly belongs on the Win ephpod section, but Ephpod syncs manually by default correct? And the "sync and quit" feature is what you want to avoid when using your iPod on 2 comps right? Thanks.

Correct. But even if you manually sync (and have the delete files option checked) you can lose the music. But you still have to work at it to do it. ;)
