View Full Version : Audio Splitter Type Thing...?

Everyone knows there are cables to allow two sets of headphones to be plugged in from one iPod, using the headphone splitter thing..

But is there one that works the other way? One that plugs two things into one set of headphones. For example, I want to plug my headphones into my PC, and my iPod at once. So that I can listen to music from my PC, then when that is off I can listen from my iPod. (without fiddling with wires..)

I am really not good at explaining anything atall, so Ill use a diagram :D :

Of corse the PC and iPod wouldnt BOTH be playing at the same time.. and the headphones could be repleaced with speakers, so when the PC is off you can play your music through the PC speakers without having to pull the pc out etc...

Right, after going on and on and just confusing myself, has that made any sense to anyone? :D

you can do this.
i'm not sure whether or not it can be in one part, but it can be done.
go to tandy [U.S.=Radio Shack], check if they have it.
if not, you'll need a setup like this [black dots are female, black lines are male]:

1. Headphones
2. Female Audio -> Female Audio Adapter
3. Male Audio -> 2 Female Audio Adapter
4. Male Audio -> Male Audio Cables [2 of these, 1 for the iPod, 1 for PC]
5. iPod/Computer

That'll work ya.

I'll have to go check out if I can get the right stuff but thanks! I'll give it a go as soon as I can.

Until recently, I had my speakers at work rigged as Andrew showed and it worked just fine. The trick is that the headphone splitters really don't know or care which way the stuff is flowing, so all you need is the splitter and a female to female adaptor (making sure it is a stereo adaptor!)

Oh right, really? That's good then, makes it a bit clearer and easier for me.. Thanks

If you live in the UK a trip down to Dixons will yield all the things you need for this crazy contraption.

I'm surprised a simple cable splitter can act as a mixer...
Or is it that one output is muted out when another has audio going through or something like that? What happens when both outputs are outputting?
This is weird...
