No there shouldn't be. What might be happening is windows is trying to install the iPod w/the same letter as your external HDD.
Not sure what OS you're running, but in XP through control panal>administrative tools>computer management>storage, you can change the drive letter assigned to the iPod.
Try that...

Thanks for your reply :-)
My external is a "G" drive and ipod connects as "I" drive
I am running XP
I instaled the Ipod then plugged in the External it worked fine for a while then it again crashed my External saying I had no drivers for the external ..giving me the "error delayed write failed to G:/$mft" again

Not sure what that is....oh, wait, I seem to remember a problem w/XP and multiple devices hooked together on firewire. Something about renumeration. If you don't have it already, get Sevice Pack 1 for XP. Or you can search Microsoft's knowledge base for "Firewire"--it'll come up.

Please tell me if you figure it out. I have the same problem.
I connect my iPod to my external FireWire HDD. Sometimes the computer will stop recognizing the HDD when I connect the iPod and start using it. Since I usually want to transfer music from the external HDD to the iPod, this is very annoying. :D
Running XP, with Service Pack 1.

yeah, I looked for the topic as well last night. They must have removed it for some strange reason. I know there used to be something there.
Does the iPod work fine when the external drive is disconnected? I'm just wondering if you disconnect it temporarily to get it set up properly (i.e. reformated to a WiPod), that after that thing's will work properly.

yeah I did it that way too , took out the hard drive ,,installed the ipod ..introduced the hard drive in after and it then gave a delayed write error again ..this time getting rid of the external drive drivers ..if i have no external attached at all when using the pod everything works fine
