Yes, the connection type doesn't make a difference, ephpod just needs the iPod to show up as a drive which USB does.

Adam riddle me this....
What do you do if the fanastic windows XP operating system gives the iPod 2 drive letters, yes 2. iPod =E, and then just to make sure also sees it as removable disk = H
Everything was working fine with Firewire - but though as i off traveling - most PC's would have USB/2? This would be the way to go - now MC9 just crashes when I try to sync with the iPod (E)
In the device manager it is also showing as...
1) Apple Computer_Inc. iPod Ieee1394 SBP2 Device
2) Apple iPod USB Device.

Cheers for your help on this one.

A stupid question:

You don't have both the USB and FireWire leads connected to your PC's USB and FireWire ports, do you?

;)

D'oh D'oh D'oh - and D'oh!
You have hit the nail on the head!
It never even entered my head that, that may be the case. I just assumed the the Firewire part of the USB2/Firewire cable was for power, and not for transfer.
I will give it a another try this evening, this time with the FW plugged into the mains and not the PC.

Cheers chaps - mind now at rest (although I feel very ickle and slightly stupid)

Praise the Lord for helpful forums!

I really look forward to your follow up response. Why? Because I had always wondered what would happen if you plugged in both the USB and FireWire leads. Would the PC blow up? Would you fry the iPod? I guess I know now, maybe. ;)

I don't think that'll fry it - it still works on FW - however - XP does not see it at all on USB.
Any ideas?

Update!
Restored the iPod via the updater, still no joy!
Moved the device from USB2 card to USB2 onboard port - and bingo!
Nice and easy!
Only issue is now - on FW it is E and on USB it is H - still it works and i'm as happy as a mink making love!

PS the transfer is slightly faster on USB2 - sorry!
