best way to charge battery?

hi, ive read different methods to maximize the life span of the battery. whats the best way?

ive heard that you shouldnt let the battery completely die out? also that you should always let it charge completely before disconnecting it. is this true?

oh, and ive only plugged and unplugged the headphones once and i dont plan on taking them out again (unless i really really have to) in hopes of avoiding that crackling noise issue.. am i being extremely paranoid?

Best way to charge the battery is with the unit turned off and through the power cord.
It seems like the recommendation not to let the battery drain fully, but I have never found a supporting document that is reputable to support such claim. But I never let mine drain all the way just in case.
I have no idea about the headphone issue, but if your ipod was one of the initial release, I am sure it wasn't fixed.
