can't get out of the "ok to disconnect" screen

Subject says it all...i've tried resetting it, it stays in file mode
...tried the holding of fast foward and rewind to get out..no luck

Do a reset, menu + pause/play. Hold it down until the apple logo comes up.

If that doesn't work, do it w/the iPod connected to the AC Adaptor.

Does this occur when the iPOD is not connected to the PC as well?
