so my shiney new ipod arrives and now i have the trauma of finding a firewire card for my desktop windows2000 pc. well aware of the finnicky nature of the ipod with pc firewire cards, i've been cautious in making my decision.
finally found a shop who are practically guaranteeing that the standard lacie pci firewire card works wonders with the ipod - but if it doesnt they're not prepared to accept a return once the box is open.
as this could well be forty quid down the drain if i'm unlucky, is anyone able to send me soul-lightening stories of their positive experiences with this card?
chin chin!

never actually heard of it. But, if they are saying that it works w/the iPod, seems to me that's a guarantee and they should accept a return if it doesn't.

Pay via a credit card that you're on good terms with that credit company with, and do a chargeback if they refuse a return. Not only does it hurt the company's credit/merchantability rating, it will get you the money back from them selling you a defective product.

Copied from another firewire card thread here - hope the info helps... but 40 quid with no guarantee of a return (your legal rights say otherwise) does sound so good when the apple supplied one is only 10 more.

So... I DON'T need a Firewire card with a connector to plug in a power cable (floppy drive or hard drive sized)???
I'm considering getting the pricey 50 quid belkin card from apple along with my main order because it has the power connector and via chipset. But I've stopped myself from buying cheaper cards because they don't have the power connector.
I can get cheaper cards for 30 quid and less which is a substantial saving. However if I return my ipod to apple I can return the card too if I buy it from them.
At the moment scan.co.uk have dlink cards for 19 quid (with delivery) but they have texas instrument chipsets. Maplins have 30 quid unbranded cards with VIA chipsets but no power connector (despite the box illustration). Maplins also have a 40 quid branded VIA card with floppy drive sized power connector.
Any thoughts?

Don't buy the dlink card from Scan. I did and my iPod does not like it.
Now trying to find a card it does like...

Apple sells the Belkin PCI card, which alot of people have had decent luck with. Windows reccomends a number of cards on their website, you can also check that out. I have a friend who has the SIIG card and they are quite happy with it.
good luck.
