Seeing as i'm not having any actual problems, i just had a couple questions, i suppose this goes here.

Alright! i've recently got myself a Mini, and am running Windows XP.

First question: how do i change the name of my mini?

I've read that you can change the name in iTunes by simply clicking on it and renaming it, and it appears to rename the iPod in iTunes , however looking at the About screen shows differently. My mini is still named the bland "IPOD". Right-clicking and selecting Properties from My Computer when the mini is enabled for hard disk usage allows me to rename it, but the characters are all in caps, and i cant use things like decimals. Is there any other way to rename my mini?

Second question: Are software and firmware different? Or are they the same thing? Ie. will running the most recent iPod Updater (2004-04-08) have my mini up to date, or do i need some other download as well?

Thirdly: There appears to be a character limit when using the Notes function of the minis (aka it will not display past a certain number of characters). Anyone know what it is? Better yet, is there any way to disable it? Having to chop up large documents (such as short stories) into multiple bits is a hassle, and i'd like to avoid it if i can.

Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the lounge.

1-To name the mini you must mount the iPod in iTunes and in the source list, double click on the iPod, a space opens and allows you to type the name that you want to name it. After that just click outside the space to close.

2-Running the Updater will have your mini up to date with the lastest version. No you do not need some other download.

3-The character limit is 4k. There is no way to disable it.

I use iPod Library (it's freeware) to download to the Notes section. It breaks the files up to readable size and transfers them to the iPod. It works great and it's easy to use. Go to the 'Download' section above and click on Windows. There's a list of software there.

The funny thing is, i tried that renaming method earlier, and it wasn't working.

It's functioning now, provided i don't type and decimals (.) into the name. Essentially i was trying for "n.m.n.l.", and it doesn't like that. "nmnl", however, seems to work.

Now the only problem i'm getting is that my text is all uppercase, when it should be lower case. Any suggestions? :D

And thanks for the recommendation on the txt splicer. I'll definately look into it.

Make sure your caps key is turned off. I named my iPod and only the letters I put in caps are caps and the lower case are just that. So always check your caps lock key and make sure it's off.
