I have a 4-pin firewire on my computer however i dont like the fact that it wont charge my ipod. i was thinking about buyin the connector and have the firewire connected to the charger and the usb to the computer. is there any noticeable speed difference between 4-pin firewire and usb 2.0? are there any othe choices insted of teh 4-pin firewire/usb connector out there? many thanx

Welcome to iPodlounge.
It's a toss-up between the speed of USB 2.0 and FireWire...some say one is faster, some say the other is faster. Both will be plenty fast, so I'd say you're probably better off with the USB cable for the reason you mentioned (charging via the FireWire portion of the cable).
There aren't any other connection choices out there for the iPod (other than a 6-pin FireWire connection). Probably not a choice for you, unless you purchase a PCMCIA FireWire card for your laptop.
