Had a win 10GB ipod for a month before getting the dreaded dead mac face. Sent it back, two weeks later they send me a new one. Great I thought. Plugged it in, synced all the music with MM, no errors......but no music on the IPOD, although the free space has gone down the right amount.

Tried restoring IPOD, now says 4555657767635GB capacity (which would be nice!), format: unknown. Tried formatting through windows, which it did, but after a restore same result.

Apple tech support as much use as a chocoltae fireguard, just say send it back (again)

Strange thing is its working fine as a removeable drive. I can drag and drop files no problem.

I've also tested on another machine with identical results, my Firewire card is fine, I've tried the "forced Firewire mode" etc.

Any other ideas before I send it back and go without for another 2 weeks?

This is really putting me off IPOD (after I waited a year to get one) and Apple in general. Are they this unreliable or am I just very unlucky?

ANy suggestions much appreciated.........

I doubt very much you have 2 bum iPods. The odds are against that.

More likely it's to do with your configuration (software or firewire card).

If you're using MMJB, the first thing I recommend is to get off of it. Uninstall all the Apple software, the iPod Plugin for MMJB and MMJB, then try something else. MC9 is the closest to MMJB in terms of functionality (although much, much better) and it's the fastest in my tests. Xplay and ephpod are good alternatives as well, they are primarily for uploading to the iPod though.

Then see how things work.

Oh, and what type of firewire card do you have? If it's an Audigy, dump it and get a different card.

Nope. First was totally dead - hard drive failure after a month of continuos use, during which time the firewire card performed perfectly, and continues to do so with my scanner and DV camera.

Replacement arrived yesterday, after trying at home I brought the unit into work to test on a totally different machine here, which has a belkin FW card, and I only installed ephpod but I get exactly the same as at home :(

Yes, I think I am that unlucky.
