I use the ipod and the adapter to connect to the mini IEEE-1394 port on my laptop. Is that port also able to charge the battery of the ipod, or only the full size firewire ports?

You need the full size firewire to charge your ipod. If you have to use the included firewire adapter to plug it inot your laptop, you're out of luck.

Note that a powered firewire hub will charge the ipod. I imagine if the hub is then connected to a 4-pin firewire port you can charge & sync at the same time. It works with the Belkin F5U526 from ecost.com
