If everything is working seemlessly, why do you think you need other software?

i have never owned an ipod and don't know of anyone who does... i dont have the discs that come with the ipod... i'm just wondering if ther is anything else i am supposed to have... my windows xp never acknowledges that the ipod is plugged in...it does everything right though... when i plug in the firewire there is no little ipod in the lower right hand corner, no ipod under control panel/ system/ hardware... yet everything works great....

thanks if you can help

The disc that come with it just contain the Firmware update/restorer and Itunes. Both of which you say you've already done.
What else are you expecting to happen?

Those two sentences contradict each other. XP should show that a device has connected. You should see the ipod drive under "my computer". The ipod should show up in ITunes, and you should be able to copy music to the Ipod.

How do you come to the conclusion that everything is working great?
Please provide some information of what you can and can't do with your Ipod.
But I would suggest that you RTFM. (You can download the manual from the Apple site, if you haven't got it) Read that, then you will have a better idea of what is and isn't supposed to happen.
