I'm thinking of incorporating a dock in my car. It's a 99 VW Golf. Bear with me for a minute.
A line out to the back of my deck, and another to the cig lighter. (all wires to be hidden behind the dash and the upholstery). The dock is going to have to be mounted somewhere other than the cupholders, as they are being the gearshift (it's a 5speed).
How would I go about mounting the dock on the dash? none of that dodgy cellphone-holder shaite. I'm going for style, here. What I have pictured in my mind involves a blazing flame made from lego, superglued to the dock. I've heard tell of mounting brackets that hook onto the vents ... can anyone expand a little for me?

Nevermind ... it's working now - I like the idea of an iPod concealed int he armrest! very Jamed Bond, hehe. The remote is a nice touch too.
I'm still sold on the dash tho ... have you seen a vent mount before?

i've seen vent monts, but none specificly made to fit the ipod... the ones ive seen are universal mounts, like the one i used in my instal.
i've heard some bad press about vent mounts tho.... its bad for the ipod to get hit with blasting cold air outta the a/c vent.... condensation can build up inside the ipod and mess it up. also, when driving, your ipod will most likely be in direct sunlight - not necessarly terrible, but should be avoided.
i too have a 5 speed, so i ran into same problem as you - finding a mount location that will not mess with my shifting into 5th... thats why i ended up installing in the armrest.
i would have liked to have the ipod in plain view, where i could control it and read track info, but i had to mount in the armrest. i'm glad i did. the remote is a MUST if you mount somwehere where its not very accessable. i use it all the time!
anyways, check out ProClip (http://www.proclipusa.com) . they make some of the best mounts around. I'm using one in my 04 Audi S4 instal in a few weeks. you can mount these mounts pretty much anywhere two peices of material meet on your dash. pretty expensive tho. also, this would work, more tacky tho Radio Shack AC Vent Mount (http://www.radioshack.com/product.asp?catalog%5Fname=CTLG&product%5Fid=17-548)

Hey, thanks alot!!
You have a point about the air coming from the vent. I hadn't thought about that before. I saw a TV show that featured celebrity rides where this team customised an H2 for 50cent, and his iPod was installed directly into the dash, where it was flush with the GPS screen - it looked SO sexy. I doubt I could go that way, obviously, but I'm determined to come up with something. I worked at Future Shop and Best buy for almost 3 years, so I have connections :)

There are lots of very clean dash install examples on the forum already - it realy depends on the type of dash you have. From what I've seen here, Maxima's have a pretty obvious location and for others it just takes some time looking. Here are some of the best examples I've seen so far:
Check out dbett's install here. (http://www.ipodlounge.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=22948&highlight=dbett)
or iGuy's install here. (http://www.ipodlounge.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=32103&highlight=iguy)
or kloh's install here. (http://g35ipod.com/gallery.php?skin=hotpod)
or my STS install here. (http://www.ipodlounge.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=33356)
