would it be possible to have a smartplaylist that would play the songs of a particular artist, but not play 2 songs from the same album in a row, and constantly updated so that each time i chose the playlist it would be refreshed from last time, until it had gone through every song from that artist? any thoughts you clever folk?

The part that I don't think anyone can guarantee is the "but not play 2 songs from the same album in a row" statement. Although you can "randomize" the order of a Smart Playlist, you may get two songs in a row from the same album...especially if you're limiting the Smart Playlist to just one artist. But otherwise, the Smart Playlist is do-able.

Here's a suggestion to consider: What I do when I want to hear a list of songs in a particular order, I make a standard playlist and arrange the songs manually. I can move the individual songs around to put them in the order that I want them in. Doing it this way you can still achieve your idea.

Something like this should work:

[x] Match all of the following conditions:
Artist contains Primus
My Rating is greater than **
Last Played is not in the last 1 weeks
[x] Limit to 1000 songs selected by random
[x] Match only checked songs
[x] Live updating

Change it around to suit your Library setup and ratings scheme.

hey, a nice thread. is this smart playlist possible ?
i'll call it colors.
the song name should contain blue or red or grenn etc...
but the genre should not be audiobook.

so, if i now check "match all conditions", itunes is looking for a song named "blueredgreen" which is not an audiobook.
but i'd like to have all songs in my playlist which got a color in theyr name....

i hope you guys understand my problem.

You can't do such list because iTunes can use all OR or all AND. However if you consider some other software, then you can, but not live.

Actually it's possible using the latest itunes, suporting multiple playlists. so have lots of playlists, but will work in the end ;)

You mean you can create a play list of playlists? Cool. I didn't use it yet.

Yeah latest version, 4.5 added it. It basically allows OR and AND statements in one playlist, but using other playlists as an intermediate step.
