I'm liking my Sennheiser PX100s. I bought them after reading several posts here. Got them at Amazon for $35. I've got Senn buds as well, the MX400s, $15.

i've been using these on my bike and they seem to work pretty good. i like the ear buds, they seem to fit more comfortably than my etymotic ER6's.
maybe i've lost some range in my hearing, but the sony's work pretty well and have decent base.
for about 40 bucks the sony's seem like a good economic alternative to the ER6's.

I can't deal with things in my ears, so I don't wear buds. For portable sound, I've used the Koss PortaPros (US$49.99) for years, and have been truly impressed. Drawback: they're kind of ugly. But the sound is worth it!
Recently, I bought the Koss KSC-35 clip ons (US$29.99) which are available only from the Koss web-site. They have the same driver as the PortaPros and therefore have the same fantastic sound, but they look better and they are more truly portable.
Here's a link to a review of the PortaPro:

You'll never get the sealed in sound of in-ear headphones with phones like these, but the quality really is excellent. (And I prefer to hear a little of what's going on around me when I'm out and about, anyway. I think it's safer.). My one complaint with the KSC-35s is that though the driver is exactly the same and the sound is exactly the same, the clips don't hold the phones quite as tightly to your ear as the Portapro headband does, so you need to turn them up a little louder to get the same effect.

After reading a bunch of old posts, I just dug out my tried and true PortaPros. I had forgotten how good these things sound! Sweet. A bit bassy, and a bit dorky looking (read "traditional") but they have proved themselves over time.
I think I prefer the Senns for being out and about, but will leave the PPs hooked up to the PC for now. Nice to rediscover an old friend.

If you only have $40 dollars, I would go with the Apple in-ear headphones. They have excellent sound and perfect bass. One issue many poeple have with the Apple in-ears is the fit. Some people say it doesn't fit their ear well. Mine fit perfectly, and there are 3 pad sizes included to find the perfect fit. Although, I did find them a bit loose while wearing them the way Apple said to, so I flipped them upside down and wrapped the cord over and behind my ear. It worked like a dream. Definitely best for the price.
