Q: I have Windows98 can I use it with the iPod even though Apple says I can't?

A: Yes, you can if you have Windows98SE. If you don't have SE you cannot use the iPod as standard 98 does not have USB or Firewire support. You will have to follow these steps to configure your iPod under Win98SE.

Please help me understand. I have a 4 1/2 year old laptop with Win98. It has USB ports that I use to connect my external CDR, my iPAQ, etc. Why is it that Win98 doesn't support USB? I don't get it?

Will be in the market for a new computer and mp3 player, but just curious why I can't get the mp3 player now????

That FAQ should be clarified: it doesn't have USB2, you have USB1, which will be VERY slow.

You might be able to get it to work. But understand that it will be hours to copy your songs over and I personally wouldn't want the iPod's hard drive working that long as it would cause excessive heat build up. Remember, the iPod is just a hard drive, but it's in a much smaller less heat dissipating case.
