No, both the FireWire and USB cables that Apple has for the 3rd-generation iPods will not work with older iPods. I believe the 1st and 2nd-generation iPods were FireWire-only, and should come with a FireWire cable.
so...there aren't any way to connect ipod to my pc???

You just need a regular firewire cable- 6-pin to 6-pin. You can get them from anywhere, they're not apple specific.
hello...
thanks for the answer...well..now i've another question...about this ipod:
i'm gone here and i've seen that i can make an update:
http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/ipodupdate.html
1)but what does this update really mean???
with this update i can install the same firmware of 3rd generation into my old ipod??
2)and also...coul my ipod works as external hard drive instead of only mp3 player?
3)i need some particular software to make works fine (also as external hard drive) my ipod??or i can use only itunes...
thanks a lot...
