Just bought my 15 GB ipod today.

Well, all is going well with the ipod itself, but we went to buy a couple tunes from the itunes store and after making the selections for purchase, we get sent to a "A New version of itunes is available. Please update your version of itunes to continue using the itunes music store." page.

If I hit cancel, I get sent back to the previous itunes page.

Here is the question: Do I have to update itunes to 4.5 to use the store, or is there a way to use the store using 4.1?

And a second question: If I update to 4.5, what else will I have to do (I don't understand what all this is about the 2.2 firmware, or whatever--not to good with all the lingo yet).

thanks again for all your help. Shoot, I thought I could make it more than a day without asking more questions.

download the 4.5 and install it... wont do anything to music you already have
then download the firmware for your ipod and install that
wont do anything to music already on your ipod

Wow!

I assume I find the firmware for the ipod at the apple site?

And what about what I have seen regarding updating quicktime?

you can DL the firmware from apple.com... heres a link

http://www.apple.com/ipod/download/

regarding updating quicktime... even if you dont use it, you need to have the most up-to-date version to run itunes 4.5. Itunes 4.5 is required with the most recent firmware.

the reason for this is... when apple wrote the itunes code, it used code it had already developed for quicktime (their media player) which has been out for years. the newest version of itunes requires code written in the newest version of quicktime. sooner or later these two programs will be merged (like.. shutter... windows media pleyer) into one ap which will play video as well as sync with itunes

Thanks for your help.

Do you have a link to the version of quicktime I need to update to? I went to qucktime and found the 'free' version and the pro version for 30 bucks. Don't know which one I need.
