Hi, this is a post for my friend (i also have an iPod but its working fine atm).
He has a 15gb Gen 3 iPod working under Windows XP. The other day when he tried to turn it on to use it he it did not respond, blank screen. It was not the battery as he had charged it up the previous day. Well he left it for a day while he was a school then comes back home and now when he tries to do anything with the iPod it just displays the apple logo for a while and then shuts itself off. Apparently one time it also displayed an exclamation mark in a triangle (i'm guessing not a good sign).
He has tried resetting the iPod with no luck so far. Windows itself will not recognise it at all when connected so no help that way.
Any and all ideas much appreciated...:(

I had the exact same problem just a day or so ago. It turns out that the partition table on the ipod was overritten and was invalid.
In my case XP would recognize the drive ( assigned a drive letter ), it was just unreadable.
I used Runtime's diskeditor to repartition the drive, and then I was able to restore using the Updater program. I can give you more details if you require them.

Thanks, i'll definitly give it a go but i don't even think it shows up as a drive letter in windows. I'll get him to check.
He is thinking about returning it to Apple for a service anyway as it is (just) inside the 1 year warranty.
Thanks for the help.
Try holding down the menu and play button for about 10 seconds, it should 'click' back to life. I've had this problem a few times and it is quite annoying! You always wonder if it will come back to life with all the music intact or not! So far so good! Let me know how you go.

I doubt a reset will work, but when it keeps showing apple logo do this:
hold down previos and next together AFTER resetting. this will force disk mode and computer should recognise iPod. now backup files etc then restore using updater!

I have a first gen. ipod - windows xp and I can't get past the apple screen. Computer won't read it, no music or menus will show up/play. I've tried resetting holding the play/pause then forward/back buttons and no avail. I've even tried unplugging the battery for a bit and replugging it in and it still doesn't work.
Does anyone have any other suggestions?
Thanks.
