I just got a new 3G 15 GB Ipod. I am using usb 2.0 to transfer files to it. I have about 12.9 GB of music and I am ttying to sync it all to my Ipod. I am also running the new 2.2 Firmware.

Now, after uploading about 200 songs via Itunes 4.5, my ipod will start to make noises with the hard drive. They do not sound like bad noises per say... the type of noises a hard drive makes when it is working hard. But when it start to do that the transfer stops. And then "the drive keeps working" for a few mins.... and after a while it goes quiet... but the transfer never resumes... and all i can do is physically unplug the Ipod.

What is wrong? Is there a known issue when transfering a large collection of music?

Is my drive defective. I would like to hope its not a physical issue. I am running the HDD scan right now. If that comes clean does it mean I am safe?

Also if anyone has had similar problems please post. thank you.

There is not much we can do other than return the product to Apple for repair. I ran the HDD SCAN as well and it failed the test.

I have yet to revceive my return box in the mail. No sure how long this whole return procedure will take before i get my hands on my new ipod.

are you 100% sure you are using usb2?
i had this problem using usb1.1, its a bug in windows i believe that makes it have a caniption when transferring lots of files. A similar thing happens when you transfer files to an external usb drive or something of the sort.
If you are using usb1.1, then i'd suggest transferring less files at a time - thats how i had to do it before i upgraded my computer. I did about 1 'page' of a maximised iTunes, occasionally a bit more, and that seemed to work. very annoying and time consuming, ut it works.
If you are 100% sure you are using usb2, then maybe restoring the iPod firmware [again] will help.

try resetting and then holding <<, menu, center, and >>: http://www.ipodlounge.com/tips_more.php?id=443_0_11_0_C

this fixed my "READ FAIL" error. when i did the diagnostics hdd scan after the button combo disc scan my ipod showed HDD PASS.
