View Full Version : Apple no longer makes the Orignal iPod earbuds!

I had a few problems with the earbuds that came with the iPod (buzzing in the left earbud) and I requested a new set. After getting the one ones in the mail I opened up the box and I had a new set of Apple's $40 In-Ear Earbuds! I called up Apple to see if there was a mistake and they said that Apple no longer makes the old ones and that the In-Ear ones are all they sell now. And I must say the new ones are sooo much more comfortable than the old ones and have much better sound quality. Thanks again Apple!

My earbuds make a kind of buzz too...I got my iPod on february and sent it back to Apple on March because it had some issues.....I had to wait 20 days for a new one, do you think they will change the earbuds now?

PoPo
05-18-2004, 07:18 PM
did you have to send in your old earphones, or did they just send you new in-ear earplugs?

MusicManiac
05-18-2004, 07:22 PM
Yeah, I need to get mine reparaired because the insulation is falling off. Did you have to send them back? It appears as if I do.

Just call the Apple support line and tell them your earbuds are buzzing (or some other story) and ask them for a replacment. They will ship you out a new pair for FREE. And no you don't have to ship your old ones back out to apple. Good luck people!

I have it for my iBook, but the iPod didn't come with it, and I haven't bought one.

Ok. I filed a repair service for my earplugs because the actually do buzz, but the cancelled it. Why would they do this? I even called apple support but the wait is 15 minutes! I can't stay on the phone that long. Any suggestions? I am not just trying to get the 40 dollar earplugs, just some working headphones (but the $40 pair would be nice 'nudge, nudge, wink, wink).

Well looks like Apple finally did something good. Was talking to a guy just a min ago and he said he got the old ones. So it may not be absolute. Note that when he called they refered him to the replacement website. Maybe you get the new ones if you do it all over the phone.

Can I do this in the UK? I have an ipod mini and my earbuds are actually buzzing now, well one of them... and I need a replacement. I wasn't gonna bother with another set of cheapy ones but are they doing in ear in the UK? If not, is it worth me just buying them ie. are they any good...
Thanks.

For those of you who are willing to buy the headphones, the in-ear ones are AWESOME! It's like the music is inside you. Besides, I find that the original earphones would hurt my ears. The in-ear's come with three sizes depending on ear size. I would definately recommend them!

I requested a new pair online at the Apple website, adn when I go to check the "repair status", it says "closed". Does that mean that they canceled my request or that my request has been fulfilled? I requested the new pair on Friday, and today is Tuesday and I havent received anything.

Unfortunately they aren't the in-ear ones. :(
Just the regular default crappy ones :(

pretty fast delivery I must say though....apparently apple mustve gotten wise or the in ear headphones being delivered was a mistake or just a one time thing...

Blagh...

Infamous Mobb
05-26-2004, 07:35 PM
Will the people that got the in-ears please post the following:

1)When you requested the "repair"
2)Where you requested it (online or by phone)
3) What you put where it said "describe problem" online or what you told the person on the phone.
4) Whether you put online/told the person , what type of headphones you needed "repaired" (in-ears/default)
5) When they arrived.

Maybe we ccan find a sure fire way to get these darn in-ears.

I'm not entirely sure when I asked for the replacements but I did EVERYTHING over the phone. I had to be just before noon. I called up told the guy that the left earbud was buzzing and asked what could be done (I didn't ask for a replacement off the bat) and he asked me if my earbuds were the six hole ones (the orignal) and I responded YES. He put me on hold a few times, talked to someone and then asked me for my address and said a replacement would be out. When I got them I even called up Apple and asked WHY I got the in-ear ones (I was worried I had to pay for them) and a different person responded saying that Apple no longer makes the orignal earbuds. The replacments were on my doorstep that next morning. Thats all I know.

Mikebuzzsaw
05-27-2004, 12:38 AM
Maybe, they are trying to rid alll the orginial ones if the they are indeed stop producing the orginal buds.

Quite frankly, whom ever posted that Apple stopped making earbuds, is probably blowing smoke out his a** or is the lucky benefactor of some error.

As great as it would be for Apple to stop making those c**ppy earbuds, they are still quiet frank and explicit when they say that all ipods come with the earbuds, still on the Apple website. Also, they still are very straightforward on the apple website when they say that the better inear phones are still an additional accessory.

both the earbud evidence and inear phones evidence is at the bottom of this page: http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore?family=iPod

I am in the UK and was ordering some stock earphones and accidently ordered stock and in ears (don't ask me how - I was half asleep at the time) I couldn't cancel In ears, and got them sent in the post, alomg with a note telling me to ship back the broken ones (which I obviously don't have). So I just sent back the in ear ones I had just received, and the normal stock ones arrived the next day, without asking for a return of the faulty part...
There you go - I dont think there is any chance of nice in ear ones for me here in the UK!

i just called in and told them the left earbud was buzzing. they are sending me new earbuds, not sure which kind they are. i actually bought some in-ear bud before but they only fit w/o any of the rubber things so i sent them back because it wasn't worth $40. at first the guy was going to have me send in my ipod and i was like "NO! it's only happening with the earbuds and i think there is a little buzzing in my other headphones because they are really old!!" so he was like ok and now just sending earbuds! yaye, free ones since i already lost one foamy thing. it already says my dispatch is closed so hopefully i'll get them in a day or two!!

laim, if you don't return in-ears or if you don't have in-ears registered under your Apple ID then wouldn't Apple just send you a bill after a while?
I am thinking this because when I had to replace some part in my iPod bundle I read the letter that came with the part and it said that if this part is not covered by the warranty then a bill will be sent to me later on or something like that (of course, that didn't apply to me). I wasn't asked to return the faulty part, though, and it wasn't earphones anyway.
Well, if they ever send you a bill just phone them up and say that you were confused and thought what you had were in-ears because they were "in your ear" unlike normal headphones.

Jackus
06-11-2004, 03:09 PM
Egosphere: I have tried the Liam theory before him, got sent the in-ear ones, along with clear instructions to send back the damaged in eras otherwise they would sent me a bill for them if they didn't receive the broken ones within 14 days. They gave me a label for UPS and I just the sent the in-ears back, and I think they have been accepted. I hope that this answers your question, and anyone putting "In - ear's" on their service request form will receive a letter with the in ears telling them to send back the broken ones.
Thanks.

I'm going to try on Tuesday. I was going to ring today but they are closed and tommorow is Queen's Birthday, a public holiday.

What I'm going to say is that my earphones are broken and under warranty I want them replaced. But I'll also say that if possible could they please send out the in-ears as the other ones hurt my ears.

Do you think it'll work? I mean, its better then just asking for a replacement and waiting to see what you get.

well i just checked the apple.com support page and filed a problem with my headphones, however there is an option to select In-Ear for accessories and then brings you to a page where it asks for payment method in case they need to charge you. AndyH
07-14-2004, 01:43 PM
Jordanus: You rec'd that letter as you never sent your original damaged in-ear headphones back to Apple.

Oh, that's right...you never had any to begin with. See, this is what happens when you try to "scam" a company out of a product. Next time I'd suggest purchasing the in-ear headphones like everyone else does, instead of trying to scam a free pair through Apple's customer service.

MuzakMan
07-17-2004, 01:22 AM
I'm not going to try this or anything. It's not worth the hassle.

As for scamming Apple though, they should (***).

They sell a GREAT product, don't get me wrong, but DAMN, is it expensive.

It would be nice if they could include at least a DECENT pair of earbuds with their EXTREMELY expensive device.

I say everyone should scam the crap out of Apple. It's not like they need the money!

You realize those in-ear buds only cost them a few dollars (if that) to make, and they are charging you 40.

**** 'em. That's what I say. :D

I think $40 is pretty cheap since they could just sell them for $150 and pretty much no one would really complain. They could at least get away with a $100.

Wow, that Jordanus is one annoying little kid. Hopefully Apple contacts a credit agency.

I called Apple (with legit bad ear buds, I'm not a theif) and received new ear buds (not in-ear) within 20 hours. As usual Apple's service is awesome, although the phone call took 40 minutes.
