View Full Version : Solution for using iPod in win98 using USB
*** This should be used at your own risk ***
I've developed a USB driver for windows 98 and 3G ipods. It is based on the Microsoft standard USB Mass Storage Driver, and all I've done is modified it so that it knows that the iPod is a USB Mass Storage Device. You can download it here (http://ninjapineapple.com/WIN98usbipoddriver.zip) - but use it at your own risk. I would especially advise against trying to update your firmware using it. It seems to be ok for use with Anapod, but ymmv. It has only been tested on my european 20 gigabyte 3G iPod.
*** This should be used at your own risk ***
Edit: This driver currently doesn't work with the iPod mini. I'm investigating now though.

I wouldn't use it with XP - but there is an iPod driver built into XP so you shouldn't need anything else. With my girlfriend's XP Home laptop, it just came up as a drive - no itunes installed, no special drivers, nothing.
Hey!
I just registered here to say.... Graf, you're THE man!!!
Your driver worked perfectly for me, runnin Win98SE, with an european 3rdG 15gb iPod, using USB 1. Just when i was starting to think about leaving my beloved Win98Se to install the evil WinXP, i stumbled here with your superb driver...
Thanks SO MUCH!!! Now i better get an USB 2 card:D
By the way, im using EphPod for it, since i just couldnt register AnaPod. EphPod works great for me tho. AND its freeware ;)

Just to let you know, the driver worked for me using the original Windows 98 with my 4G iPod. I successfully used Winamp to transfer songs using my Usb 1 connection, but I had problems ejecting the iPod. Winamp couldn't do it and everytime I ejected in explorer the iPod restarted, losing all my saved settings. When I installed my Usb 2 drivers I was asked to reinstall this driver for the iPod but windows didn't recognise it afterwards, despite the Usb2 ports working with other devices.

my 4g ipod didnt work with this...
i have win98SE and have installed USB 2.0 drivers, i tried connecting the ipod to both usb 2.0 and 1.0 hubs, but when going thru the dialogues to install drivers, even when pointing at the folder holding the driver files, it said "no driver found".
:(

When you connect your ipod it will ask you for the driver for the new device (if it doesn't you must have already chosen not to install a driver - so you need to delete your ipod from device manager). When the install driver wizard pops up, choose "Display a list of all the drivers..." and then choose "Hard Disc Controllers" from the list. From the bottom of that screen click the "Have Disk..." button which will allow you to locate and install the driver that you downloaded here.

thankyou allyharp. i didnt get mail notification so i apologise for my slow reply. this was more successful to a degree, but... now the drivers are installed, there are no bleeping icons in the devices section, however all my ipod can do is flash "do not disconnect" at me... i have NO idea what it's doing and the system still doesn't list it under My COmputer as another drive... i'm gonna try again with the drivers... and maybe try plugging it in via USB 1.0 this time..
i just hope it doesn't mind that i do this while it's telling me "do not disconnect!"

ok i'm FINALLY sorted!
this driver will not run on USB2.0 with my G4 ipod
nor will it let me install firmware (firmware doesn't recognise iPod is connected)
otherwise it's a saving grace thankyou, thankyou!!!!
Before i sintalled the drivers, my iPod could charge for power off the USB2 port (even though the system couldnt install it as a drive) but after in installed the drivers it wouldn't charge off the USB2 port at all... this may be because my USB2 card is a slot card added to my laptop.
and i did see your warnings regarding firmware.. i just wanted to clarify what it will and wont do for people..
THANKS AGAIN! esp to ally for the advice in installing the driver.

Ally: I want to thank you for telling me how to install it. I was right clicking on the INF and telling it to install and it came back saying something about the 2 files not being registered or something.
Using your directions it sucessfully installed the driver, but ml_ipod or anapod would not pick up my ipod being connected via the usb port. I went to my friends who has xp and let itunes format my ipod and than came back to my house and sure enough ml_ipod and anapod both pick up the ipod.
Thanks graf for this great solution and ally for the great directions. You guys are great!
EDIT: should say this is with the 4g 20gig ipod.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!
I just got my 4G 20Gig iPod and stumbled across this post. Your driver worked like a charm. I formatted my iPod for Windows using an XP computer at work, then downloaded your driver and EphPod on my Win98SE computer at home. I had a little trouble with EphPod creating the database for my iPod, but deleted the 'ipod_control' folder to get it to work. I transfered my first album last night using USB 1.1 and although I got an error upon exiting EphPod, the information transfer went through to my iPod and the songs played perfectly. Thanks again. You've saved me a lot of heartache. I really didn't want to have to upgrade to a different version of Windows because my computer doesn't have the memory to spare for XP greedy nature.

I can't remember where I read it, but I'll elaborate a bit for you. Connect your iPod to your PC (I used USB because my computer doesn't have Firewire). Open 'My Computer' and if your iPod is recognized, it'll be under one of the drive letters as a Removable Device or something (I can't remember exactly what mine said). My iPod showed up as drive D:, so I double clicked on it and it'll open up a folder with the file system of your iPod. I think there were 3 regular folders and 1 hidden folder (you have to go to View and change your settings to be able to see hidden files and folders if the 'ipod_control' folder doesn't show up). Anyway, once you get to that point, all you have to do is delete the 'ipod_control' folder from your iPod's files and then run EphPod, which should now work properly and no longer give you an error message as it did before. Hope this helps. Good luck.

I'm getting my ipod on Monday, and I'll definately post my experience :)
wow thanx for this driver, i am yet to use it but i plan to use it when i buy my ipod, in the next few weeks if i can get my hands on one....
can anyone correct what i shud do if im wrong? :
use the apple disk to format the ipod as instructed in the sticky bout 98SE,
use ephpod and this driver to tranfer the music?
EDIT
i would have the option of using my mums laptop or tablet (both with XP) BUT i cannot leave all the mp3s on the computer coz its her work comp, so a) is it wise to use it to upload via itunes, on the laptop or tablet, and try to persuade her to let me leave the mp3s on there, and b) will itunes work on win xp tablet edition?
thanx for any reply, and if you think im hi-jacking the thread say so and get a staff member to move it, thanx.

Thank you!!! I'm running Win98 and was bummed when I noticed that the Ipod would run on Win 2000 or XP only. I was ready to upgrade to XP until I stumbled across this post. As my question below will establish, I'm no computer expert or even that knowledgable. However, I had little problem installing the driver, connecting using my USB 2.0, downloading Enphod and transferring music. (Deleting the ipod_control proved a very helpful hint)
Here's my issue. I have had no problems transferring older mp3 that were ripped using Musicmatch years ago. Enphod however will not recognize as "ipod supported" any CDs or files I ripped into Realplayer or Windows media player. Also I noticed that the files that do transfer are generally huge (25k vs the smaller 2-3k).
I think the thing I have to do is covert the files to mp3 but I have no idea how to do that. In addition, windows media player is the only program that will allow me to burn cds. I don't want to loose the ability to burn CDs if I convert the files to MP3 but I want Enphod to recognize them. I looked at the winamp site and have no problem buying the "pro" program but I don't know if it will work. General thoughts or specific thoughts on winamp?
Thanks very much for that!
I brought my iPod into work with a file I wanted on it to download to my PC, only forgetting my work PC was 98! Wanted drivers for my iPod which I didn't have.
Loaded these and it worked straight away.
By the way it's a UK 3G 20GB iPod.

sorry if i hijack this thread but is there a way to install the drivers for the ipod (just for use as a HD) on an xp system without rebooting? my schools comps have DeepFreeze on them, which restore the pc to their default settings on reboot (getting ridda everything that was installed/put on any frozen drives).
i just want to copy some files i downloaded there, my home internet isnt that fast (its capped 4mbps, uncapping it dont help) but my school has a speed of over 20mbps so i wanna download everyything there and bring it home wit me. (specially the new 1.x/2.x gig games and proggys (dvd)

Hi Graf,
Any news on getting the driver to work with the iPod mini?
Donal (fustrated iPod user)
Heck, I did exactly the same - tweaked USB mass storage driver several weeks ago. I'm really surprised nobody did it before.
My driver was tested on 4G 20GB iPod with Windows 98 first edition and USB 1.1.
It can be downloaded from http://www.98-drivers.com/ipod.html

I used graf's driver and it seems to work fine on my Windows 98se and 3G 20GB iPod.
ohm: outta curiousity, can you update firmware using your driver? Cuz with the current driver I use, graf's, it won't as it warns so.

Hi Everybody,
I've been searching this forum for hours and still have not been able to find help for my problem. I know it's annoying to have people asking the same questions in different forums but I am really stuck!!!!
I just received a 4G Ipod 20gb from my girlfriend. My computer is currently running Windows 98SE and I have USB 1.1 and 2.0 ports available.
I realize that I cannot use iTunes because of 98SE.
I downloaded this driver from another post on this forum:
http://www.mhobot.w.pl/ipod without any success. My computer showed a removable drive (E:) but when I clicked on it, it said drive must be formatted, do you wish to proceed? I clicked yes and it went to the format screen, however it could not format the ipod.
What should I do? How can I get this ipod to work? Since I can't use iTunes, should I use Ephpod?
I don't want to change my operating system from windows 98SE or have to spend money on any other upgrades. What can I do? Can someone walk me through this?
Sorry if these questions have already been answered.... If so, please direct me to the original post.
Someone please help me, I really want to use my Ipod.
Thanx!!!!!!!

Well,
Now I really think I screwed up my ipod. It won't turn off and consistently flashes between the apple symbol and a picture of a file folder with a question mark. When I connect the ipod it flashes DO not disconnect (which I have done several times already...oops!)
Anyways, I cannot access any menus on the ipod and it will not shut off. Did I really screw it up for good after attempting to format it? (described in my last post)
I'm just going to leave it for now because I don't want to screw anything else up...
Please someone help!!! I'll be ever so grateful!

New iPod is always formatted for Macintosh. You need to reformat your iPod to FAT filesystem and build some directory structure. It is easy since Apple gives you a tool called "Updater". It is included on CD you got with your iPod. Reformatting have to be done on somebody else XP or 2000 - but you'll need to do that only once.

Hey have you tried resetting it? It has been a bit since i last did it, but I believe you turn the hold switch on than off, and than hold the menu(make sure you hold the menu button towards the top and not hold the center of it) and the middle button(select) button for about 3 seconds and you should than see the apple logo. Instructions from apple can be found here http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61705
Also, if you can see the drive as removeable have you tried formatting it with ephpod or ml_ipod?

To those of you looking for another program for transferring the songs on win98, have you tried ml_ipod http://mlipod.sourceforge.net/ ? It is a winamp plugin. The way it works is once you have installed the plugin, connect your ipod to your computer, and than open winamp and click alt + L, than under devices you will see the ipod and sync on it. It will sync all the songs found in your media library or you can right click on the songs you want and tell it to transfer to the ipod. It can transfer the winamp playlists and such. Just click import under playlists.
Here are some screenshots http://www.harrison-fisher.co.uk/mlipod/index.php?page=screenshots
It works great for me. When I am done transferring my songs I close winamp, than open my computer, and right click on the removable drive that my ipod was assigned and tell it to eject, than the ipod shows the apple logo and you can disconnect it. No errors whatsoever. Works perfectly for me.

Dude, you just saved my life. My computer crashed in the middle of transferring songs and my iPod was stuck on 'Do Not Disconnect' and I couldn't turn it off. Are you actually trying to view the contents of the ipod? If so, have you tried getting anapod or ml_ipod and see if it recognizes the ipod being connected? Neither would for me, so I had to go to a friends house that had XP and install I Itunes on it. It than asked to format the drive. After it was formatted I than went back to my house and than both ml_ipod and anapod were detecting the ipod being connected. I could than also browse the ipod as if it were a harddrive.
Hope that helps. If not PM me about the problem and I will try to help.
Bugeater93: I am glad that worked for you. I had a very similar problem as you, except mine wouldn't turn on at all, whether it was plugged in with power adapter or not. This happened within a day of me getting it. I have no clue what caused it, but I was getting ready to call up Apple in the morning and everything. I decided to look around and found out how to reset it. Thank god it worked for the both of us!

Hi all,
Some feedback about Ohm's driver at http://www.mhobot.w.pl/ipod. Based on Ohm's assurance, and after emailing him to make sure, I bought an iPod 40GB as a surprise gift for my husband's birthday.
Hubbie's 'computer expert' friend had told him there was no way the new iPod would run on Win98SE with USB 1, but thanks to Ohm and his instructions, my beloved is loading our entire CD collection onto his iPod right now. Even better, he says I'm a very clever girl.
There were a few snags which I managed to untangle by reading this forum. The solutions were:
1. Charge the iPod's battery before you start (allow up to 2 hours), otherwise it displays a frightening 'Do not disconnect' message when first plugged in to a PC.
2. Using an XP, install the software on the iPod CD and format it. No need to install iTunes.
3. On your Win98SE, download and unpack the driver file from Ohm's website above.
4. Plug in the iPod and direct Windows to the driver when it detects a new device.
5. You should be able to see a removable disk in My Computer. If you're seeing the 'Do not disconnect' message, right click on the removable disk and select 'eject' before unplugging the iPod.
6. Winamp and the iPod plug-in didn't work for me. Tried ephod, which won't install until you delete the 'iPod control' folder from the removable disk. It will then recompose the directory structure and install.
7. Following instructions in ephod, download and install LAME and EAC and you should be on your way.
Thanks for all the tips guys, and happy listening.

I'm running Windows 98SE with a usb 2.0 card. I downloaded the driver and with EphPod was able to access and download music to a 20gb 4G iPod without any issue. Tried this a few days later and Windows no longer recognizes the iPod when it is plugged in. Any suggestions?
Reboot your iPod: lock, unlock, press and hold Menu and Center keys for 7 seconds.
Worked for me.

Are you using winzip? I'm not really familiar with any other extraction programs, but I think the process should be similar... Try right clicking on the .zip file and see if you get an option called "extract to" or something of the like. Choose it and you should get a prompt asking where you want to extract the files to. It's probably easiest to just create a new folder called "iPod driver" or something so that you'll be able to recognize it later. When you plug in your iPod, you should get an alert that windows has found new hardware and that it needs to install a driver. Tell the system to look for the driver in the window you created when you extracted the files. Your iPod shuld now show up in My Computer as a removable disk.

When you plugged in your iPod did you get a message that windows had found new hardware and needed to locate a driver for the device? At this point you should have been able to direct it towards wherever you unpacked the driver.
I was having a similar issue... You can try resetting your iPod (hold down the menu and play/pause buttons four about 10 seconds) and disconnect when the Apple screen shows up. Then, when you reconnect it you should get the prompt about new hardware I mentioned above.
Hope this helps!

Hmm... Maybe check in Device Manager to see if everything is working properly? See if you've got an unknown device attached to your USB port. Also, are you using USB 1 or 2? I'm not sure, but this could be where the problem is coming from.
I only got my iPod working through trial and error... Maybe somebody with a little more know-how will stumble across this thread and be able to give you a better answer.

I used this driver, and my 4G iPod was successfully recognized as drive F through USB 2 -- but I still couldn't use it because my iPod hasn't been formatted by XP.
So, I shut down my computer, and took my iPod to a friends house who I knew had XP, but she doesn't have USB 2 or Firewire.
When I came back tonight, I plugged everything back in exactly like it was, booted up, and theres no longer an iPod drive. I've tried reinstalling the driver, I don't know what else to do.

When your done downloading files to your iPod and have do not disconnect on the screen, if you have Explorer running, right click on the drive letter that represents your iPod in Explorer and click on eject (like you would for a CR drive). This will bring up the apple image on the iPod screen and you can disconnect the cable.

Every time that i plug in my ipod i see the removable disk icon on My Computer but when I double click it it says that it is not formatted. I try to format it but it says that it couldn't do so because it said that either the capacity wasn't valid or that it was damaged which is impossible because i just got the bloody thing as a gift. Ok, i may have connected to another computer that was Windows XP but i didn't download anything to it, i just charged it up. I tried to download some drivers to remedy the situation but NOTHING WORKS!!!! I even wasted $5.00 for a driver that doesn't even ###kn' work!!!!!
AAAAAAARRRRRGGGGHHHH!!!!!
Please help me????!!!!!!!
Good luck.
The driver you have downloaded is working perfectly - without it you couldn't spoil your iPod.
Anyway. Don't worry, thing is simple.
1. Find some Windows XP machine
2. Install Apple CD on it
3. Switch your iPod to disk mode. Here' how: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651
4. Connect your iPod to Windows XP and initialize it with Apple tools. Never ever format it with Windows tools!
5. Now you can use it under your Windows 98 and, of course Windows XP too.

how do i initialize my ipod with apple tools? and what cd did i need for the ipod because it didn't come with it? or at least my friend didn't give me an apple cd to go with the ipod.
You can download it from http://www.apple.com/ipod/download/
I can see the newest version has been integrated with iTunes so in fact all you need is iTunes 7.

are you saying that it will download the apple cd or itunes? all that i saw that was available to download is itunes, not this so called apple cd that i need to initialize with apple tools.
Once again:
1. The newest version of Apple Updater (also called Apple Tools, usually available on Apple CD) has been integrated with iTunes so in fact all you need is iTunes 7
2. You need it ONLY ONCE - for initializing iPod. After that you CAN USE ANY SOFTWARE YOU WISH: Anapod, Real Player, Winamp, ...
3. So, find some other Windows XP machine, just for a while and install iTunes there.
Please, maybe somebody else could put this more clearly.
