View Full Version : Charging iPod in exo & exo3 case?

I know Apple reccommends not charging the iPod while it is in a case, but how many of you do this regularly? I ask because I just got my exo3 & exo from Lajo, and the exo3 needs to stay on for a day or so before it will "shrink up" to a tight fit. I know I can't dock the ipod like this, but could charge with the a/c adapter. I've read that Lithium/Ion batteries give off almost no heat when charging. The iPod will only heat up if the HDD is spinning, so as long as I'm not in disk mode I should be ok right? This is a really big deal for me because I have made a custom iPod car dock for my 2001 Mustang, and the exo3 makes it fit "snuggly" in the holder. I am planning on getting the SIK IMP to power the iPod in the car so I don't drain my battery. Should I be worried about the iPod getting too hot, or should I be ok? Any advice on this is extremely appreciated.

I have a Speck Skin that I keep on at all times with no problems.

If you're really worried about the temp your ipod gets up to while in the case, get a digital thermometer with a prob and place it flush against the back of the ipod while using it...
Apple's web site states:
"iPod's battery works best when iPod is at room temperature, generally near 20? C, but you can use iPod anywhere between 0? to 35? C (about 32? to 95? F). "

I leave my iPod in my cases while *charging* and small transfers, but not for extended file transfers. In my experience, substantial file transfers (and thus hard drive activity) is what causes the iPod to heat up significantly... not simply charging.

So it sounds like I should be ok with the SIK IMP in the car as long as I don't manually change songs everytime and make the HDD spin up. I usually use playlists in the car anyway as it is sometimes difficult (and can be dangerous) to try to navigate the menu system while driving! :) Anyway, the only time I've ever noticed my iPod being reasonably hot is after I trasferred 25 gigs to it!
