I can't seem to find any references here to the Koss "The Plug". I got a pair from Circuit City two days ago and think that for $20 they're pretty decent. Sound good, good isolation. Here's a site with extensive input about modding them for better performance, although it dates back to 1999 and Koss seems to have since incorporated some of these mods. http://headwize.com/projects/showproj.php?file=cmoy4_prj.htm
I'm no audiophile but to me they sound good, better then stock Apple earbuds. More bass. I'm going to try and hunt down some cheap earplugs to use in place of the Koss cushions as they don't really fit all that great. Well, in my left ear fine, not the right though.
So far I'm impressed. If you're looking for cheap, decent sounding plugs that reduce ambiant noise, they're worth a look. I tried them on my motorcycle, loud pipes, open face helmet and they were worlds better then the Apple ear buds, this was only at 30 mph. I have yet to try at highway speeds. I don't use the iPod on the bike much for safety reasons but will likely do so on long lonely stretches this summer and I hope that with these phones, and modified cushions I'll be golden.
