Without even addressing the legality of downloading copyrighted material over a P2P application, this suggestion seems just plain silly.

It is clear that some people will do anything to avoid paying for something. For those types, nothing will change their behavior.

However, what iTunes does is make the illegal copying of copyrighted material almost plain a waste of time and effort.

First, you never know what you are really downloading over the P2P networks.

Second, performance is just plain miserable on most of the P2P networks.

Third, the P2P networks are not user friendly for finding content.

iTunes, for $.99 per track, is felt by many of us to be worth the costs. We give up quality (128 kbit encoding) to gain ease of use. For that $.99, I know exactly what I am purchasing and what I will receive.

I do not, however, agree with the use of DRMS on the downloads. I accept that Apple had to use it to obtain the permission of the media companies, but I do not accept the explanation it is necessary to protect the rights of the copyright holders. DRMS only has one affect. It prevents people from exercising their "fair use" rights over the media.

And every DRMS (CSS and FairPlay and others) have always been easily removed with utilities. I always remove it.

I do the same thing but I go to the store and buy the CD. Its a great way to preview lots of music quickly.

I'm far to lazy for that. I'd rather just pay for it. I like to support the musicians I listen to.

^agreed.

For new stuff i look for the CD for 9.99 (good for more unheard of bands)

Otherwise... I go secondhand. The RIAA hates me... Ha ha.
