Alot of you guys out there seem like car people so can you tell me the major difference between the two??? I've compared them on the VW site side by side and there are only slight differences between the two (like something is optional with one car, but not avaible for the other). thanx

Slight diferences? Um, did you notice the massive size difference between the two? The Jeta is more of a compact car, not much larger than a Contour, the Passat is a full size car near to the size of a Taurus. The Jeta has a TDI model, the Passat doesn't (the current models.) Also notice the price tag, the Passat is more expensive. The Passat has an available V8, the biggest engine for the Jeta is the V6 I believe. I am not VW expert, that's just the little I know.

the jetta is a size between the golf and passat, though in australia and europe there is a model called the bora, which is basically a golf with a boot (trunk). from smallest to biggest...lupo, polo, golf, bora, passat : )

just checked vw.com, and the US jetta is everybody else's bora!

The new Jetta GLI just came out, 6 spd tranny, 18" BBS rims, Recaro seats, plus all kinds of other goodies. We had a 99 Jetta and loved it. Plenty of room and a cavernous trunk...you can fit just about anything in there. It got traded in for the GTI 337 I have now. Check out www.vwvortex.com for info beyond vw.com.

Yep...size difference between the two. Even though the jetta is smaller than the Passat, I still love my Jetta :) Plenty of trunk space too!

Nope... The Bora is EXACTLY the same car as the Jetta! The Jetta is only a Jetta in the US the rest of the worls its a BORA...lol...guess you did say that... the quote I have of you is incorect tho...

The golf is the same size as the jetta...

The Golf is has same frame as a Jetta it is just a hatcback...
GTI is a 2 door golf with either a 1.8T or a VR6...and more luxury

Lupo and Polo are not offered in the us...

The Jetta is the sport car of the VW line along with the GTI...If you dont count the Concept R lol not in production. Th Passat is more of a family car. Lare luxury sedan type fast with teh W8 but also is over 40k at that trim...The Passat is offerd in 1.8T 2.0(maybe 2.2) TDI... thats new, VR6, and V8 which is avalablein the W8 trim only...im tired of typing now if wou want to know more ask...also the MK4 Jettas are shaped totaly different. The MK3 Passas looks more like the MK4 jetta...but its not quite the...same...-JP

I really wouldn't classify either the Jetta/Bora or the GTI as a "sports car". They really are better classified as "sporty sedans" or "sporty hatchbacks". A "true" sports car is something along the lines of a Porsche Boxster, Mazda Miata, Honda S2000, etc. My $0.02

Yeah you are correct the Jetta is not a true sports car... VW's sports car would be the R32. Then the GTI, then Jetta... Like you said its more like a sports sedan...

Another difference, at least here in the states.

The Jetta is built in Mexico, while the Passat is built in Germany.

In Texas, the Jetta is ranked pretty high on the lemon list for cars.

I test drove both cars before I bought my Passat in Nov 2001. I felt very cramped in a Jetta, while I had plenty of room in my Passat (I'm 6'3").

My Passat has almost 60k miles on it, and has been a great car.
