This was a thread we had going over at the old forums (http://www.xsorbit1.com/users/dennx/index.cgi?board=musicexplore&action=display&num=1033047746) that I really enjoyed, so I thought it was due for a reprise.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Car Wheels On A Gravel Road" (AMG link (http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&uid=CASS80306201955&sql=Aae3zefekogf1))
Lucinda Williams
Those of you here in the 'lounge who have known me for a while know what a fanatic I am for female vocalists. Despite this fascination, somehow Lucinda Williams had flown under my radar until I heard her newest album ("World Without Tears") a few months ago. I was immediately a huge fan, and I quickly purchased her whole catalog (well almost - her first two albums are being shipped to me from amazon.com as I type this).
"Car Wheels On A Gravel Road" is my favorite Lucinda Williams album, and my hands down favorite album right now. I just can't listen to it enough. Well known for her incredible song writing, poignant, distinctive voice, and wonderful blending of folk, country and rock into a genre all her own, I believe this album showcases all these aspects of her artistry to perfection.
It also has an incredible "one-two-three" punch of three opening tracks: "Right In Time", "Car Wheels On A Gravel Road" and "2 Kool 2 Be 4-Gotten". I love these three songs, but only slightly more than the rest of the album.
Highly recommended, particularly for a flavor of the Southeastern U.S.
Tom
Tom,
I am flattered that you deem my thread worthy of resurrection ;)
Hmm, I seem to keep coming back to "Audioslave" by Audioslave at the moment - another album in a genre occupied by the likes of Incubus, Puddle of Mudd, Creed etc - they are a new form of Rage Against The Machine (3 ex RATM members).
Maybe it is my midlife crisis that makes me enjoy this "Angst Rock" is it called?
But then I also enjoy Amor, Gotan Project, Cinematic Orchestra, Porcupine Tree and Jakatta quite a bit at the moment too (If you can have more than one final song..........;))

I really am liking Neutral Milk Hotel's "In The Aeroplane Over The Sea". It's really quite good, and can be creepy or soothing depending on one's mood.

mmm...
It's all about Tori Amos - Boys for Pele. It's creepy (she hooked up her piano to the metal fence of a graveyard, for chrissakes) and beautiful all at the same time.
Download "Caught a Lite Sneeze" or "Horses" - my personal favorites.

I FINALLY found the a copy of the cd ive been looking for the past 4 ro 5 years, and it is now my current fave... Temple of the Dog by Temple of the Dog
The seminal grunge album, featuring an all-star cast, with Chris Cornell and Eddie Vedder sharing vocal duties, and the rest of Pearl Jam and Soundgarden doin EXCELLENT back up. For any rock fan, this is a must for their collection, and for any Soungarden/Chris Cornell/Audioslave fans, well, its a no-brainer.
Many people may not be aware that this album came out BEFORE Pearl Jam released Ten, so this is actually Eddie Vedder's first major label recording (since he wasn't in Mother lOve Bone along with the rest of PJ). IT is a work of great emotional and musical significance, and in my book, THE grunge album (with Nevermind a close second).
Hunger Strike and Say Hello 2 Heaven alone makes it worth the price of admission. Cornell at his best, Pearl Jam before they, well, weirded out and hit it big...its a piece of musical history and one of the greatest rock albums ever released.

I also love female vocalists. IMHO Basia is one of the best out there. I have all her stuff...

Fans of female vocals should check out Kathleen Edwards' new album 'Failer'.
The first two tracks ?Six o?clock news? and ?One more song the radio won?t like? have a strong flavour of Neil Young about them and she comes from Canada too, as do most of the best female singers. She gets compared to Lucinda Williams a lot, it seems, but cites Aimee Mann as her big influence. The next track ?Hockey skates? is a quiet gem. She has a good breathy voice which sometimes wavers in a very fetching way, and she seems not to be capable of writing a mediocre song. This is one of those rare albums where you wait in vain for a duff track that doesn?t have memorable bits of musical business or a snatch of lyric that catches in your head.
It's on my Albums of 2003 list, because it came out over here this year. If you live in the USofA it should've been on your Best of 2002 lists!

Getting a lot of mileage out of El-P's 'Fantastic Damage'. Out of Brooklyn, good underground hip-hop featuring many of El-P's label-mates (Definitive Jux).
Only temporary, though, sure the old faves (The Sone Roses, The Jam, The Verve) will outlive this puppy.

It takes some getting used to, but once youre in the groove, it will hypnotize you and transport you to another place...the mark of a great album IMHO

I actually like it better than OK Computer...don't think I'll get much agreement there, but I love every single song. There's no filler like Fitter Happier.

Hail to the Thief. I've been waiting for this album since it was rumored to be released since last year. Every track is insanely good. It gets better with each listen. Both Kid A and OK Computer are my favorite albums. This one seems to combine the best of both.
I don't think "Fitter Happier" is a filler, even though it isn't a song either. But somehow, it fits. A filler is something the artist records to just for the sake of completing an album or having enough tracks to put on disc. Fillers aren't attempts at songs because they are there to make the other, more radio-friendly tracks sound better. "Fitter Happier" was more of a statement. HTTT, for that matter, doesn't have any, either. Though "The Gloaming" has yet to catch on with me...

Yeah, you're right. It works on some levels, but doesn't hit me as well as the other tracks do. ('Electioneering' is a great song!!!) I kind of got my terms mixed up there, sorry. On another note, I love 'The Gloaming', but 'I Will' has yet to warm up to me.

I totally just got into "I Will". Thom's voice gets stronger as the song progresses... needed a few listens, though.

Yah, HTTT Rules!! I initially loved Wolf at the Door and Myxomatosis, but after a months worth of listenings now, I cant stop listening to Stand Up Sit Down. The build up of intensity in that song is unbelievable! and yes, after a month, I STILL cant dig The Gloaming. I dont skip it, but i just cant get into it like every other song.
Am I the only one here who likes The Bends better then OK Computer? I mean, OK Computer is a masterpiece and all, but my deep rock roots and guitar mentality just make me appreciate The Bends a BIT more. OK Computer was the Prog-Epic in the line of Dark Side of the Moon, while The Bends was more guitar and rock based, sorta like Revolver. And is it just me, or doesnt Electioneering sound like a friggin Oasis song??
Radiohead rulez. nuff said.

Hmm, I prefer OK Computer. I dig the concept behind that album. But both are awesome awesome records. I would say Kid A is my favorite album, though...
"Sit down. Stand Up." is a powerful song. The line "We can wipe you out anytime..." gives me the chills.
I'm not really into Oasis. I like Blur, though. Great Britpop.
Hellz yeah, Radiohead rules!

OK Computer is a consistently good album, but The Bends has one of the greatest songs I've ever heard, 'Street Spirit'. I'll say that OK Computer edges it out though.
Fav albs... hmm. Got to be
Less Than Jake - Anthem
Frenzal Rhomb - Shut your Mouth
Yellowcard - Ocean Avenue
and the new Rancid album, -Indestructible
stasyna

Finger Eleven - Finger Eleven.
A.F.I - Sing The Sorrow
M Jackson - Thriller
Thriller is so well composed, finger eleven is hard and has some awesome beat to it, AFI mixes metal, rock, and some techno into their songs and produces kickass album.
Hmmm....lately it's been Incubus: S.C.I.E.N.C.E. since I finally was at the mall to buy a copy to replace a burned one, but there are other favs as well:
incubus - I was gonna list albums but I'll just simply say ALL
RHCP - Blood Sugar Sex Magik, Californication, By The Way
SOAD - Toxicity, Steal This Album (gotta love the actual CD itself)
The Lord of the Rings - soundtracks from each movie....
and various others you can't go wrong with:
Santana
Hendrix
Marley (BOB obviously)
and the list goes ever on...

The war on errorism - NoFx
And I actually agree with Stasyna But I'll go more into nearly any Michael Jackson CD.....reason? Go on a funky ### pop-style hippie freak out blaring Michael in the car....take along a friend and yell randomly and dance like Mike would....then you'll have a good time...oh and when listening to Billie Jean, do as I did and yell after the kid is not my son, but if he was I'd touch him....lol....ok j/k....I really said it, but I didn't mean it...:).....but DO listen to Michael, despite the crap he's been through he's still a great artist.....think about it....how many of you liked him before he went to court? How many of you liked Pee Wee?....yeah I thought so....
YEEEEEEEEEEEES! iamaustin - The War on Errorism is soo good!
Re-Gaining Unconsciousness is the best song!

Nas - I Am is 100 times better than stillmatic :p
2pac - All Eyes on You is great.

You MUST listen to Ian Brown's awesome versions of Thriller and Billie Jean. They make Whacko Jacko's originals look very poor indeed.
Right now Sensation Black and White are really pumping me up.

The Thrills - So Much For the City
The Black Keys--"Thickfreakness".
It's like B.B. King fronting Nirvana, a kind of heavy metal blues thing--doesn't sound like anything else out there. Picked this one off Emusic--it is simply fantastic.

I second that on the Thrills.
Also:
--the soundtrack to Jackie Brown, (with Brothers Johnson, Stylistics, Minnie Riperton, and the piece de resistance, "Street Life" yeah!)
--The Sound of the Jam -- can't believe it took me so long to discover this
--Avalanches-- Since I Left You Makes public transit bearable.
--Super Furry Animals, Radiator. I'm not too keen on their newest, but this one always is in full rotation
(And whoever said Basia, nice job. Time and Tide was one of my favorite quirky albums of the '80s-- somewhere on the edge of new wave and bossa nova. weird but very cool)

My top Album for about the past 3 weeks has been "Soul Station", with Hank Mobley and the Wynton Kelly Trio, a great album for all you real jazz people.. Before that I was listening to the Wynton Marsalis Septet's "Live At the Village Vanguard" album. Its 7 cd's, one for nite they played. And before THAT, Beck's "Mutations" and "Sea Change"...
