I am about to be the proud owner of a 20gb ipod and would like to use it in my car.

My car is a Fiat Punto Sporting (2001) with a manufacturer installed Blaupunkt stereo (tape and radio only with a subwoofer in the boot).

Does anyone know what equipment I need to get my ipod working in the car? I have read up on this on the Apple web site and seen a couple of options but its not overly clear to me what I need to do.

Can anyone advise me of what I need to do next?

Much appreciated
Jo

You have three choices:

1. Use an FM transmitter such as iTrip and tune your car radio to a spare frequency. Those of us in the UK have more free frequencies than the US and I have found the iTrip to work very well. Downside is that you only get FM quality music.

2. Hard wire the iPod to your headunit. You may be lucky and have a head unit that takes a CD changer. If you do you might be able to get a cable that plugs directly into the back of the head unit from your iPod and then you use the AUX button the stereo. Definately offers the highest quality sound, but more trouble, especially if you don't have an AUX socket. Some head units have a 3.5mm socket, front or back, which also serves to hard wire the iPod.

3. Use one of the cassette systems. The cassette has a head with aligns itself with the head in your cassette player and a cable coming from it to plug into your iPod. Easily purchased from Argos/Maplins etc.

If you intend to use the iPod in your car regularly get a car charger, either hardwired to a 12v supply, or one which plugs into the cigarette lighter socket.

Have fun.

I personally used the FM modulator (not FM transmitter; those are horrid) and am pretty happy with the results.
