that strikes me as funny that there are more windows ipoders than mac ipoders seeing as the ipod is made by apple, but actually, since macs are only like 3% of the pc market, it makes sense...

I voted PC, because that's what I use for work AND school (work lets me use my laptop for school), but if they made AutoCAD for a Mac, I'd be 100% Mac, instead of 25% Mac like I am now (funny thing is, my wife and I own four computers, three of which are Macs)...

Don't shell out for a new one (unless you REALLY want to). You can get a nice processor upgrade for less that $500. My PoweLogix 1.3Ghz (actually 1.2Ghz) upgrade cost me $325 and my old G4 (formerly 400Mhz) zips along GREAT. I figure that upgrade bought me at LEAST 2 more years on this machine, maybe more....:)

I've been considering doing upgrades pretty seriously. I could do a processor upgrade, get a new drive (my music collection is eating up at lot of space and my design work isn't helping the situation), more RAM, etc. The problem though, is upgrading the video card. The Sawtooth motherboard doesn't support the correct voltage for an ADC connection. So, getting a new video card is a pain.
So far, I've added a new CD-R drive, a gig of RAM, and another 40 gig drive. I could really do for a 120 gig drive, a new video card, and a little more umph in the processor area.
It just depends on what comes out this summer, essentially. New G5s? G5 Powerbook? We'll see. ;)

As far as the Video card goes, this is the first I've heard of that. My G4 Sawtooth has the AGP graphics card and there are several options for Video card and I plan on picking one up soon. The ATI Radeon 9000 (I think it's the 9000?) sells for about $150.00. I only have a VGA monitor and the card comes with an ADC/VGA converter. Look at my sig below. All those drives are internal. If you go for a drive over 120Gb your going to have to get a new ATA Bus card, about $90 or so.
Also...No G5 iBooks or Power books this year at all....

There is a problem with using the Radeon 9000.
http://www.barefeats.com/sawgraf.html
From the article:
I can't recommend the ATI Radeon 9000 Mac Edition for the "AGP Graphics" Sawtooth even though it is a very good card. It offers a DVI and ADC port. That's great for the other G4 Power Macs with ADC support built into the AGP slot, but NOT on the Rev 1 "AGP Graphics" Power Mac. The 9000's ADC connector does fit the connector from an ADC display, but nothing happens... why? because there's no power sent from the "AGP Graphics" Power Mac through the Radeon 9000's ADC connector to the ADC display. Got it? So the ADC connector is useless and dual display support is not an option with this card on an "AGP Graphics" Sawtooth Power Mac (first model to offer AGP). It only supports DVI and VGA. (See Apple's tech articles referenced in first paragraph.)
And I plan on running two monitors on mine. ;)

If Apple had rolled out the iPod and iTunes for Windows and Mac users at the same time, its dominance of the digital-music player market might have been far more complete and achieved far more quickly.

PC guy right HERE!!
Macs are pretty sweet though, but i'm happy with my pc.
Yes Macs do look nice (so can a pc too tho)
Yes MacOS is better in many ways
But I find their usefulness runs out quickly, lack of support for most things. Then theres the biggest problem... the rip off prices, as a PC builder I find that apples prices for hardware are usually four times if not more than PC parts... staggering.

Aside from games I have found nothing that I can't do on a Mac. Lack of support for hardware or software? Having used both Macs and PCs for the last 10 or so years, I tend to find comments like this a bit disingenuous. Would you mind elaborating on your statement?

I am using a Mac. Funny thing about that is that I switched about a year ago because of how much I hated the Musicmatch software that you had to use with Windows before they released Itunes for Windows.
I have been pretty pleased with the Mac (Using a 17 inch PB). In another 2 years when it should be time for a new computer, probably stay with the Mac as long as it continues to perform so well.

I'm an ex-Mac user and have no idea why Apple is still in the business of manufacturing computers. The day Windows 98 shipped was the last day that there was a single good reason to pay more money for less computer in my mind.
It's odd, because it's the same attempt at marrying hardware to software that makes me hate the Macintosh platform with a burning passion but makes me love the iPod. Where I find the attempt with the Macintosh to be more monolithic and user unfriendly than the worst things Microsoft does, it works and works well with the iPod :D

Windows, always have been. Used Mac in HS to do a class project [it's what we had], and in college to get on a mud if all the IBMPCs were taken.
I don't know if I'm a 'fan' of Windows, MS products certainly could use some improvement, but historically for pricing and availability and widespread usage, IBMPC/Win-compatible apps had the edge.
And now I'm in the corporate world, our building has 500+ PCs running Win2000 or XP, and I send stuff out to hundreds of people who use MS Excel, Access, Outlook and Word, so I probably won't be trying Macs out anytime soon.

Ditto on the last comment. My own computer experience goes back to CP/M and DOS 1.0, and I was solidly entrenched in the PC world until I got an iPod a couple of years ago.
I bought a Powerbook last fall, and picked up an iBook for my wife last week. Other than my Windows PC that sits in the corner (mostly for testing), I'm running an all Apple household now.... :)
In fact, I was eager to jump on a Powerbook almost a week after I bought my first iPod, but compatibility was my biggest concern, both in terms of whether I would be able to share business application data with my Windows colleagues, and in terms of the tools that I may need to use as an IT consultant.
The first issue was actually very well addressed by Microsoft Office 2004, which solved the need to shared Word, Excel, Powerpoint stuff with Windows users. I've run into virtually no issues with compatibility between Mac Word and Windows Word documents. For access to my corporate Microsoft Exchange mailbox, I actually find that Entourage does things better in some ways that Outlook does.
To be fair, I never had much use for Mac OS 9 and prior, as they actually seemed more limiting. However, now that Mac OS X is using a BSD Unix derivative under the hood, I find that a Mac is the best of both worlds... On the desktop I have the incredibly cool, stable, and user-friendly interface, and under the hood I have the raw, unbridled power of Unix. I still run a lot of network-related tools as part of my job, and with the Powerbook, I simply run the native Unix code rather than their anemic Windows ports.

I think I'm one of the odd balls on the forum who started out as a Mac user, used them nigh exclusively for several years, and happily switched to PCs and hasn't looked back.
Just can't see the point in Macs. They aren't any more user friendly once you get past week 1, they're every bit as arcane and complicated once you get past the basic control panel (perhaps even more so now that they're based on the Unix kernel), less upgradable and more expensive.
They're not bad machines, it's just that, in spite of the hype, not any better than a PC, so why anyone wants to saddle themselves with the increased premium is what I scractch my head at. Anyone who says they're truly better has fallen for advertising hype, not experience. I think that once people start to fall for the hype they start to amplify in their minds everything that is poorly designed about Windows and tell themselves that it's so much better under MacOS while at the same time failing to see and admit that MacOS has an equal amount of warts and blemishes.
I've always been a Mac user...
