Hi,

Just bought a new 10G ipod w/firmware 2.0 to use on XP pro & Ephpod 2.58.

My ipod screen constantly showing 'do not disconnect' after I download songs & save ipod changes & exit ephpod, have to shut down PC then Ipod can return to its main manual, otherwise if i unplug ipod without shut down pc, it will flash 'do not disturb' & force me to do a reset in order to get ipod menu back.

Have tried MMJ & Xplay on the new ipod, so far only ephpod let me transfer music, very frustrating software bugs here & there as opposed to such nicely built hardware.....

I fell victim to this also. When you are done syncing the iPod, right click on the iPod manager icon in the system tray, and select unmount iPod. Shortly, the menu will return to the iPod, and you can undock it.

I sure wish the instructions were better with this :(

I don't know what the I-Pod manager software is. Perhaps it a hangover from that god-awful apple bloatware that comes with the I-Pod.

In windows XP you should have the "safe remove hardware" icon in taskbar. If you click on this you should see the drive that the ipod has connected to XP as. Click stop and the IPod should reboot and come back up to the standard screen.

Just unplug it. When you plug it back in it will reconnect and you will need to stop the drive again before you disconnect.

Your iPod mounts itself to your system.

This means that Windows can (and does) use it at any second for whatever Windows needs to do.

If you just pull the plug, Windows assumes it's still there and typically won't be able to re-mount it until you reboot.

Do not just pull the plug. Use the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon in your system tray (by the clock) to STOP your iPod before you disconnect it.

In the meantime, if you can't get the "do not disconnect" sign to stop showing up, do the following (this happened to me, and I figured out how to fix it, via the apple support site).

1) make sure the ipod is docked
2) hold the menu + play button down for 10 secs (it won't seem like anything is happening, but it should work)
3) let go when you see the apple sign

After that, simply undock the ipod as detailed in previous posts. Hope that helps!

Hi,

I got a similar problem which was caused by Norton System Doctor (part of Norton Utilies Group) running in the background. Check first if there are programs which can cause this 'do not disconnect', like Firewalls or so.

Could someone comment on what is the safest way to unmount if there is no other way? Often, i get a message stating "generic volume is running" and am not not able to unmount. Sometimes the safely disconnect disappears altogether. Since I have no iPod icon in the tray (another problem, should it be there?) it leaves me with no way to unmount.

WHAT IS THE SAFEST WAY?

Christopher

After years of happilly using Win 2K and now XP for a year, the only thing that brings on the BSOD is plugging the MAC ipod into my PC via firewire. The whole thing just dies.
Anyone have a fix, or workaround?
I am using ephpod, and firewire, and 1.2.1 on the MAC version of the ipod.

plug it in and BAM, BSOD.

I can't remember which, but one of the two programs out there that let you use a MacPod on Windows made my XP system bluescreen as well -- it's not compatible with XP. I don't know if it was "MacDrive" or "MacOpener" but whichever you're using, I suggest trying the other if you're getting a BSOD on XP.

Or use XPlay.

Or convert your MacPod to a WinniePod.
