Please choose the appropriate forum for this topic. Thank you. Hi
Ok i fooled you a bit its not quite as good as the apple firmware but the developers assure me the goal is in 3 months it will be just as good and will keep getting better.
I finally got linux running on my ipod today. It wasn't as hard as i first expected and i am pretty much a linux virgin. The linux its self is fully functional and the most developed software is podzilla. It looks and feels just like the apple firmware. Although playback is very limited at the moment there is constant development with new releases all the time.
Below are some images of another member of the forums ipod, will get some of mine up soon.
Info on the project can be found at iPod Linux @ sourceforge (http://ipodlinux.sourceforge.net)
The forum is the best place for the latest news

Cool.
Linux people develop. Firmware people tend not to.

I've looked at that and have been very intrigued. Mostly because i think that the ipod hardward is capable of so much more that what it currently does. Short term is more games and wma support. Long term is boundless, and linux developers have shown themselves as the most original and dedicated of any. But damn,, how unuser friendly are those directions? I'm not the smartest guy in the world,, but i'm not the dumbest either. "build this," "compile that." How bout some english.

this sounds interesting, but is it reversable?

I've been following this site for quite some time. Currently apple firmware is superior in every way (even the guy building the thing admits this), but I'm fervently expecting the day when there'll add .ogg support. Currently the ogg decoder can only decode at 80% real time and that's not particulary useful.

The source-code is available at the website, if that's what you're asking...

The current build is not meant for general consumption, and I believe that's pretty much the reason behind not making the thing into a binary (exe) file but rather making it harder to install ;)

I anxiously await the day when this project rivals the coolness of this one: :D :D :D

Doesn't the fact that it's made for the iPod make it inevitably cooler? :p

It sure is, basically the process involves ripping off the existing firmware and putting it somewhere safe. There now is a pre compiled image of the linux kernal. none of this buid, config stuff as in the documentation you get a readme when you download it which explains it better. basically you put that on with a couple other easy steps and reboot the ipod. Putting the apple firmware back on is even easier, just one step (provided you didnt loose the copy you made at the start)
At the moment its not worth putting on and you couldnt use it over the apple firmware full time but it wont be long and posibilities after this are endless.
Those linux people wont stop till even your toaster runs linux
