I have had my 3G 20-gig iPod for almost 5 months. It's worked nicely until recently. I woke up yesterday morning, hooked it up to my stereo and tried playing some music. I selected only one song (one that has played successfully on numerous occasions) and pressed play. Instead of playing the song, it went back to the main menu. (as if it was at the end of a playlist and the music stopped and the main menu comes back up). I looked in the iPod manual and wasn't surprised that it didnt say jack ##### about a problem like this. It's still under warranty, but I was wondering if I missed trying anything.
By the way, I'm running the iPod's hdd scan right now.. it's taking an unusually long time...
Anything like this happen to anyone else?
--------------------------------
I just finished running the hdd scan... and now it won't turn on.. it shows the apple logo and then shuts right back off:confused:
can anybody help me out here? or should i send it in to have the "pros" look it over

No... You are not alone... I'm also having this problem... But i found that by formating your iPod this problem can be resolved... But here comes the problem... I have 800+ songs which i can't backup... so if i reformat my iPod... all my 800+ songs will be gone...

I had that problem also but didn't have to reformat. I removed the offending song, then converted the mp3 in itunes to AAC and reloaded it. It was fine after that.

actually, im quite certain my hd is screwed up because after talking to apple i managed to get my computer to see my pod and i deleted every song off of it, and reformated it, and it seemed to work fine then, but as soon as i attempted to transfer just one song, it came up with a bunch of errors... time to send it in to apple :*(

I too am having this problem, but only with one song so far. I'm hoping it aint problems with the HDD...
Checking the ipod's disk useing the windows tools detected no errors.
If anyone finds out anything else please post it!

If it's only on one song, I'd say it's highly likely that there is a problem with that MP3. Re-rip it from the original CD if you can, I bet that will clear up the problem.

actually, it wasn't just one song... it was every single one (4491+ songs) and it would freeze in very unusual screens (it almost seemed like the combination of the main menu, currently playing, and do not disconnect screens). fortunatley i purchased the iPod applecare program and they helped me greatly. the tech had me dismount and disconnect it from my computer.
in case anyone else has this problem, they told me to:
ipod was showing do not disconnect, pc wasn't showing it in itunes, or windows explorer-
shut computer off and disconnect
hold menu and play/pause til apple comes up, then quickly press and hold previous and forward
iPod should say "Disk Mode" at the top of the screen
start up computer (wait for everything to finish loading)
hook up iPod
start iPod updater (Start > All Programs > iPod > System Software 2.1 > Updater)
Click lower button to reformat iPod hd (you WILL lose all files currently on iPod)

Thanks, I have re-ripped the song and it works.
It still seems wierd though because i played that one song heaps of times. Then one day it just decided not to play anymore.
I'm just hoping it doesn't start happening to anymore songs.
Glad you got your problem sorted out too hellfrizzle

yea... same here... The songs that don't play are usually those that i play most of the time... wonder what's going on in those ipods...
