My computer installed the new hardware but there's a red cross through the iPod icon in the tray at the bottom of my screen.

I have an Apple supplied USB adaptor, a USB 2.O board installed, I downloaded the restore software so my iPod can run on Windows ME, the drive letter shows in windows explorer but the iPod manager program says the iPod isn't connected (but it is!). Consequently I can't restore the iPod and wonder if I have re-formatted the iPod in error (and desperation!) . There's an Apple logo but no menu now.

Can anyone out there help me because I'm thinking I've been seduced by a crap product with a great design.

I posted this in another thread on Win98 (I think I'm 2000) - I am experiencing the same thing - iPod (10 GB).

I have the firewire-USB adapter...the iPod is recognized on a pc with firewire, but not on MY pc with USB 2.0.

I'm rather suspicious of any problems revolving around Windows ME, as it's an absolutely horrible os. That's one possibility, another is that the iPod isn't compatible with your usb. While I've never heard of it happening on usb, I suppose it's possible, as several people have problems due to their firewire cards. Given the fact that I'm not sure of what the problem is, I would recommend using someone else's computer to do the restore, and then try it on your computer. I'm thinking that the reason why it's not working after you did a reformat, is because you erased all of apple's software, so I wouldn't worry about that.
