is it just me or do mp3s played through itunes sound sub par?

i rip using mp3 192 but thats besides the point, when i use winamp5 to listen to the itunes mp3s they sound great, but when i play them in itunes they sound muddy and dull.

i messed with the eq also, that doesnt help. thing is it looks like my sound card EQ settings have no effect in itunes playback although it does effect winamp playback (winamp EQ not used). strange...

Check the Quicktime Control Panel, Sound Out setting. It should be either 'wavout:Windows preferred device' or 'wavout:name_of_your_soundcard'

the only 2 options available are waveOut and Directsound. i tried both but the quality isnt as good as winamp.

i tried matching my eq setting in itunes to the same as my sound card, but it still sounds a bit muddy in itunes. but why wouldnt my sound card EQ effect itunes...strange

maybe its just not as quality of a player as winamp5?

The DSP capabilities of WinAMP 5 are *far superior* to those in iTunes. So, even on crappy sound hardware, WinAMP manages to make things sound pretty good...

Apple would do themselves well to license some of the DSP technology that WinAMP has developed for themselves...

Have you ever tried Volume Logic ($10 shareware) for iTunes? It's available for both Mac and PC. I have, and the difference is like....

WOW!

what kind of sound card do you have. Right now in my computer, I am using the Soundstorm onboard audio of my nForce2 motherboard. I do notice that iTunes doesn't seem to sound as good (playback wise) as winamp5 or even WMP in some cases.
