External hard drive keeps connecting & discon

Hi there,
I hope someone can help me with this problem that I have.
A couple of months ago i transfered my itunes library over to an external HD,I also changed where anything new was placed in the external & not in the "MY Music" file where it used to be.However up until recently my external Hard drive decides to disconnect & then reconnects but when this happens it defaults back to the "My Music" folder. My question is how can I stop this from happening, can I disable the My Music Folder. Any help would be useful

You may need to go into your devices or Power settings and disable the ability to put USB ports to sleep to save power.

This is a common setting to have enabled on laptops.
