Is it possible to have my iPod docked and listen to it at the same time?
When it is docked it usually states "Do not disconnect", I understand the need to eject it etc but when I do and I get "OK to disconnect" I am unable to use my iPod.
Is there a setting I should know about?

Unfortunately, you can't listen to your iPod while it is connected to your computer (even if you eject it). You must unplug the firewire, or USB, cable in order to listen while the iPod is on the dock.
However, you can listen to your iPod while docked using your computer's sound card and speakers (through iTunes).

####!
How do I use it in iTunes - simply by double clicking the track? Isn't that just the same as listening to the music on your hard drive?

You are correct, it is about the same as listening to the music on your hard drive. However, if you manually sync and don't maintain a copy of your music on your hard drive and in iTunes, you can listen to the music on your iPod through iTunes. You simply select your iPod from the source pane and play any song, playlist, etc. (the same as you would normally in iTunes).
If you auto-sync there really is no reason to play the music from your iPod since there will also be a local copy in iTunes that can be played.

I was thinking of purchasing the "Altec Lansing inMotion Speakers " to enable me to listen and dock/charge together.
Glad I saved my money! There would be no point having it.
Not unless I listened to it and charged it later!
Is it just me or does this seem like a flaw in the system???

No no no. You can charge in the inMotions using the AC adapter.
You don't have to have the iPod connected to the computer to charge you can charge through AC. The inMotion is great. I have them sitting on top of my TV with the iPod docked. The inMotion's included adapter charges the iPod and runs the speakers. I can have the firewire cable available to connect to my laptop as needed for syncing.

Of course.
I was thinking that I would be syncing it at the same time - that's the one thing i cannot do - actually have it connected to the pc.
Would upgrading to Firewire on my PC solve this problem?

It doesn't matter which method you use to connect to your computer (ie. firewire or USB). While connected, the current firmware version on the iPod does not allow you to utilize your iPod in any way other than through your computer.
I'm not certain if this capability will be added in future releases of the firmware, but have heard that earlier versions had this ability.

Yes this was a back step to the windows 2.1 firmware. Due to the fact that mac firmware still has the capability to return to the main menu I feel relatively confident that it will return in the next update.

Wow, old thread.
Do you have the speakers plugged in. The altex inmotions provide power to the iPod while playing if you are using AC power to run the speakers.
I can't explain why your iPod decides to freeze while playing or why you can't reset the iPod while it is in this state.
You may try to do the reset while connected to your computer or AC power and see if that helps. Try toggling the hold on and off first and then doing the reset keys.

So the iPod won't freeze while connected to the auxillary cable? You may consider calling Altect customer support and chat with them if they have had other issues like this and see if they have any recommendations, etc?
