Folder With Exclaimation

I just got an Ipod 5gb Mac 1 Gen from Ebay. I try to turn it on and it shows the apple sign, then it shows a folder with an exclaimation on it, sometimes before it shuts off it shows an battery with exclaimation. When I try to connect to my PC with Anapod it shows a Ipod with sad face and Exclaimation mark. Can some one please explain what these mean? and can someone please help me to solve this problem.

From my experience with apples and breaking them, I don't remember how many times haha, in my school, those signs most likely mean it is dead ^^;

I dont know, he said it was working fine when I talked to the Seller of the Item. Now it dosent show any of that it just shows the folder with and exclaimation mark after startup. Another Question how do I reformatt the Ipod?

go to http://www.methodshop.com/mp3/articles/ipodhacks/ nad look ath the box on the left entitle "what to do if you erased your ipod", you'll probably need to find someone with a mac to do this reformatting on. And if that doesn't work most likely your Hard drive is dead.

Sad iPod icon means the iPod needs to be repaired.

Yet another reason to stay away from eBay...I'll never understand it.

I was getting this forder icon on my 3G iPod 3 weeks after purchase. Called AppleCare, they walked me thru the reformating and restore process. Didn't work. Had to send it in to Apple, they could not repair the iPod and sent a brand new replacement.

I had the same thing happen to my iPod mini. folder/exclamation mark = dead iPod. I called AppleCare and followed their instructions and eventually they sent me "the box" - err coffin. They sent me a new iPod mini a few days later. Now this new iPod isn't recognized by my XP box. I was hoping the iPod/iTunes would be my gateway drug to buy a Mac.
