Just spoke to an Apple store salesman about buying a 3G (non s) to unlock and use on T-mobile and he said that I will lose the full experience by jailbreaking the phone.

Does the phone actually need jailbreaking to unlock and will I lose some of it's functionality?

One thing I was told by O2 is that it voids the warranty for the phone if you unlock it to use with other carriers. Aside from this, I've personally seen some news articles about people downloading an app from iTunes which didn't work for them because their iPhones were unlocked versions, but this was fixed with an update on the app.

So I think it's possible that certain features may be affected, but possibly nothing major since if this was the case many people would avoid such a path. I'm sure someone more knowledgeable on the topic will have more to add though, this is just stuff I can personally confirm reading about.

i'm doing some research for a buddy of mine that's looking at getting an iphone for tmobile. obviously, he'll have to AT LEAST unlock it, but will this also require jailbreaking it? can someone PM me a link to a program that can unlock the phone without having to jailbreak it? or post it up if it's allowed. thanks y'all!

I bought a 3G in the end, but in short, Yes you must Jailbreak it to unlock it.
Basically I installed the Cydia App which is the Jailbreaking software (a long process, but easy to find on Google), then I used a Cydia App called Yellowsn0w to unlock it. Hey presto, one unlocked 3G :-)

to jb or not is a very personal decision... i decided not to.. i had an iTouch which i sold to buy the 3gs...i briefly had jb the itouch...it introduced agreat deal of instability in what had been a very stable product... i ended up un jbing the itouch before i sold on ebay... i've decided that att in my area of illinois is rock solid good and i have friends who have absolutely horrible coverage w/t-mobile so it is a "no brainer" in my case... your situation might be different-
