Well, I'm thouroghly confused now. I was under the impression that my white Apple in-ear phones WERE EX-71s. Not?? If not, where d'ya figure I saw this? Hmm . . . . . . . .
Jus' when ya think ya got yer "stuff" all in one little pile,.......
BTW, downloaded ( stole, P2P ) the sound track to The Passion Of The Christ last night. Great stuff.

The Sony EX-71s are better than the Apple in-ear phones, IMHO.

I used Sony EX51's (the earphones are exactly the same as EX71, but no extension cord) with my iPod, but then I bought Apple's in-ear headphones and never looked back.
To my ear Apple's in-ear headphones offer much better bass and wider spectrum. The sound is more distinct. I can now hear instruments and tones I could never hear with EX51's. Compared to Apple's in-ear headphones, EX51's cut bass and sound muddy.
EX51's are good headphones (especially when compared to Apples' out-of-the-box earbuds), but to me Apple's in-ear sound significantly better.

yeah i also agree that the apple's are better... bass is more thight than the sony's that gets too loud and just sounds bad with hard rock / punk rock continous beat........ i recommend the apple's if you can fit it in your ear ... u just need to make sure you are putting them on correctly (all the way in)... also set your eq to rock or r&b to hear even more bass...

I have both and the Apple in-ear phones definitely sound better. You have to get a good seal but if you do they sound great. I actually use the earpieces from my Sony's and they provide the perfect fit in my ears and the sound is excellent.

I have been using Sony EX70's for over a year now with my 2g iPod.
I've Recently sold my 2g for a nice slim 3g & Apple in-ear phones - thinking they were similar to the Sony EX71's.
I was very surprised by the sound improvement !
The Sony's sound muffled in the midrange, and I always had to use the 'Boost Treble' eq setting . The bass response was very good & deep but often overpowering.
The Apple In-Ear midrange is excellent, treble is sometimes over overpowering but the bass is slightly lacking, and I find using any Eq setting on the 3g iPod tends to cause distortion.
My Main issue with Apple buds is that unlike the Sony's I CANNOT get them to stay in my ears!!.
Every 30 seconds I am re-adjusting them as I walk down the road. They stay in fine while sat down on the train , I've tried both the small and medium sizes but neither work. And these phones sound CRAP without a good seal.
The suggestion on the iPodlounge review was to use the Sony's rubber on them but that didnt work as with these rubbers on they tend to stick out at an angle 20 degrees , so as the cord dangles downwards this knocks them out of position.
I'm toying with the idea of hacking apart some 'true' ear buds (noise protection / aircraft etc) to see If I can get the best solution!
Anyone tried this ?

Im kind of like most people who don't have either EX-71's or Apples In-Ears. They both have their problems such as not fitting in ear right ( apple's ) or the design is all messed up ( sony's ). I actually don't know what to chose now. My suggestion to who ever else is confused on what to buy, just save some extra money ( $ 130 ) and get your self some Shure E3's. E3 claims to have outstanding sound compared to EX-71's or Apples In-Ears. The E3's come with a fit kit so you can fit the in-ears in any size, and also doesn't lack the design and one side tug of the EX-71's! Sounds good to me!

If you can spend $120-$130+ go for the Shure's or Ety's for sure. However on topic in the $39-$49 range the Apple's work great for me. Fit is important. Once you have that resolved they sound great.
Don't make the mistake of only trying the sizes you "think" should fit. I started with the Medium's then thought I might get a better seal with the Small's (further in ear). I then figured (while sitting in a noisy airport waiting for my delayed flight), I might as well try the Large. I can get a perfect fit in seconds with the large buds. They don't fit as far in to my ear but create an acoustic seal very easily, providing superior sound.
NS2000X - happy camper.

Thanks NS2000X,
As I have small ears I didn't even think of trying the large buds...
WOW they work fine now, they dont fall out and I have a good seal.
So now my Apple Buds sound GREAT..
Thanks again.

:D No Problem :D
I figured I can't be the only one to initially overlook the large ear buds.
