when I plug my 3g 20gig iPod into my Gateway P4 WinXP Pro machine iTunes does not recognise that its there, and within 5 min (time it takes to crash varries) the system blue screens with a message saying it did a physical dump of memory (i've got 768mb ram and a large page file) and the file disk.sys errored.

All the while the iPod is stuck at the "Do not disconnect" screen (frozen).

EDIT -
I'm running iTunes v4.2.0.72 and v2.1 software on the iPod. The iPod works normally, and has ~3500 songs taking up ~18.5gig.

I am having the exact same problem. I'm disappointed (just as you must be) that you've not had help posted.

ya I'd really like to find out why this is happening....

for the time being I've gone back to using the 4 pin firewire on the face of the machine (rather than the 6 pin firewire expansion card) and all seems better.......well at least I can sync my songs - I still need to use the external power adaptor...

Hi Guys,

I've had exactly the same problem:
can't get iTunes to recognise that the iPod is there
can't get iPod Updater Software to reset the iPod...

I've sent a support request to apple, and am waiting to hear from them..... I'll keep you updated.

Holy crap! So my iPod is causing that! Well I guess that explains why I cant get my ipod to mount.

hmm maybe we'll finally get the problem resolved.

Does this happen for everyone using ONLY the 6 Pin firewire?? (and the 4 Pin works fine...) or for either?

for me the 4 pin works, 6 pin does not
