Is there some way to set my own sound/ringtone for system sounds such as new email received, new SMS received, etc.?

Thanks for the response.
It's a 3G-S... I've run up against enough of Apple's limitations to be pretty motivated to jailbreak, but I think I want to wait a bit longer & make sure there aren't significant issues when jailbreaking 3G-S's.
Once I do, what's the procedure, here? Is there an app for setting system sounds? Or do I just create my own sound files and rename them to match the existing ones and then overwrite?

I don't jailbreak, but I'd assume it's a settings app you dl

I'm with you. Apple is infuriating. Here's another one you should think about - the "today" screen by Intellisomething. Do a search. It replaces your lock screen with something obvious Apple is trying to eventually patent (for real, lol.) It's why I'm thinking of Jailbreaking.
