This is a great book I have about an hour left on it and have just purchased the next part of the book "Speaker for the Dead" which is even longer! Can't wait! Just thought i'd share and to see if anyone else has read this.

Ender's Game is one of my favorite stories of all time. It is definitely my favorite of the one's that I have read. I have not read Children of the Mind.

While Ender's Game is fresh in your mind, another one you might try is Ender's Shadow. It is the story of Ender's Game, but told from the perspective of Bean. So it starts out with Bean and you learn his story and how he was recruited. Then you are at battle school seeing the same things happen, but through the eyes of Bean. In the whole series, Ender's Shadow is a very close second to Ender's Game for me.

Then comes Speaker for the Dead. Also a very good story. And once again, there is Shadow of the Hegemon, that is told in the same time period as Speaker for the Dead, but you learn more of what Peter and Valentine are up to.

Glad to see another Ender fan out there!

I think I will skip forward in book sequence to Enders Shadow after I finish Speaker for the Dead. Sadly they don't carry Xenocide on Audible.

Now that's interesting, I just checked my library and they did have Xenocide in abridged form. 04/10/02 Xenocide Orson Scott Card (I also got Speaker for the Dead abridged the same month)

Perhaps this means they've dropped the abridged version for an unabridged to be added in the future. I know they've done this with other Orson Scott Card titles (I original got the abridged titles vs not having them at all then got the unabridged titles later when audible started carrying them).

Buy them. You'll read them again and again. My copy of Xenocide has lost it's cover.

Ender's Game has to be one of the greatest science fiction titles of all time.

My second favorite Orson Scott Card Book is Enchantment, based off of the idea of sleeping beauty and other fairy tales. They don't have an unabridged version on Audible, unfortunately, and it is not as good as the book itself. A must read.

Cheers,
Stu

I finished Ender's Game last week. Great book. I'm looking forward to Speaker for the Dead, but I'm saving it for an upcoming road trip.

I came off the "Gunslinger" high after listening to all the Gunslinger books back-to-back and I just HAD to find something to fill that void.

I tried Da Vinci code - ick. That really killed my "awesome audio book" high. Then I went to Accross the Nightingale floor and got my "high" back! I followed that up with "Grass for His pillow" and then I was back to that "I need a good audio book" saddness!

I tried Ender's Game on a whim. I was almost certain I would HATE it.

It is now very close to my number one slot. (I think it's a toss up between Middlesex and Ender's Game.)

I'm 1/2 way through Speaker for the Dead. It was a much slower start than Ender was for me. But I still like it. The book is really "acted" vs. "read." And that makes all the difference. I think there is something like 8 or more characters that "act" these books. It's great. So entertaining.

Denise (not at all that into sci-fi sort of stuff, but loved these books!)

I just started Snow Crush, not shure how much I like it, but I'm not all that far in. I'll pick back up on the Ender series after that. I've been thinking about doing the Gunslinger series also. I read the old books along time ago, and got through the first chapter or two on the new one before loosing interest. Maybe listening to them from the beginning will fire the interest back up. Also need to find time for Atlas Shrugged.

Finished Ender's Game last week, but will have to wait until the end of the month for more Audible credits to get a couple more in the series.

So while I wait, I think I'll listen to it again... It's a fantastic story, not what I expected, and I really want to 'read' more in the series now.

I am also new to the world of Ender, and highley recommend Ender's Game. This is the only I've 'read' so far, but if you look at the page for this book on Audible you'll find a reviewer has listed all the books in the series.

Ender's Game is one of the best sci-fi books written.
However, I'm mainly writing this review to make others
aware that there are actually 6 books (so far) in the
series:

Ender's Game
Speaker for the Dead
Xenocide
Children of the Mind

Ender's Shadow
Shadow of the Hegemon

The last two books don't actually feature Ender at all -
they're about the character of Bean and the story of
what happened on Earth after Ender's Game.

All 6 books are fantastic. I've bought them all on
audiobook, but for some reason I can only seem to
find 4 of these titles using Audible's search engine
(and "Shadow of the Hegemon" seems to have been
renamed for some reason?).

So is there an order to "read by"?

Thanks, John

I think the order is as above, it definately starts with 'Ender's Game' and 'Speaker For The Dead' is 2nd, but I've heard that some people like to then go onto 'Ender's Shadow'.

If anyone has any comments on this subject I would like to hear them as I also need to decide which book to go onto next.

Thanx

I would read Ender's Shadow next. Because it tells a story at the same time, but starts with Bean's life and how he ended up at Battle School, it is very interesting to read while Ender's Game is fresh in your mind.

Then I like to read Speaker for the Dead, and then Shadow of the Hegemon, for the same reason.

This is purely a personal preference, though.

Thanx, I was thinking of going onto 'Ender's Shadow' next, as I've heard it is a good continuation of 'Ender's Game' and isn't 'Speaker For The Dead' set 3000 years after 'Ender's Game' ?

I just used my 2 credits this month for Ender's Game and Speaker of the Dead. i have to listen to the rest of Angels and Demons first though, i'm about half done with it. Can't wait to get started on them, hopefully I enjoy them as much as everyone else has. thanks for the picks. its so hard sometimes to choose. :D

Audible now has Xenocide (again?) only like a week after I suggested it (probably pure coincidence, but it may help if more of you suggest the missing ones)

They dont have Children of the mind and Enders Shadow only in a bad quality abridged version. I am now reading game, then speaker then xenocide and hope by then they have either children or the unabridged shadow.

And they have Shadow Puppets, which seems to continue Shadow of the Hegemon, but I am not sure.

btw. I am pretty sure Speaker is not some 3000 years after Game because it is Ender again in Speaker.

But in chronological order it is already after the complete shadow subseries.

Oh it really is set that far ahead in time, well, pretty far. Not sure how far. It is still Ender because he has spent time flying at realtive time in space so he has only aged to his late twenty's/early thirtys by the time speaker roles around.

In time chronology it is Ender's Game/Ender's Shadow, Shadow of the Hegemon, Shadow Puppets, Speaker for the Dead, Xenocide, Children of the Mind.

Yup. Card is a great author. I highly recommend Enchatment by Card.

Looks like Audible has unabridged flavors of the Enderverse stuff, except for Ender's Shadow. :(

I bought the abridged version of Ender's Game when it was (I believe) offered as a bundle. The unabridged version is so much better, although I generally prefer unabridged in general, so I may be biased.

Just finished Ender's Game. It was much better than I thought it was going to be. Are the other books in the series really good as well and is ender in those as well?

Do I recommend the others? Check my post at the ASOIAF board. Good to see you, me399 :p

For the benefit of the others who haven't read the other Ender stuff - I read Ender's Game waaaay back when it came out in the early 80's.

Basically, there are 2 series - The Ender series - which is Game, Speaker for the Dead, Xenocide, and Children of the Mind.

Without going into too much detail - Speaker for the Dead is a great scifi book, but it's very different than Game. Ender's an adult, the mood is more somber, more scientific.
Xenocide and Children of the Mind are good reads, but nowhere near the quality of Game or Speaker.

The Bean series is Ender's Shadow, Shadow of the Hegemon, and Shadow Puppets. The first book is essentially Bean's story and most of it takes place during Ender's Game events. It's a fun read and it recaptures alot of the "feel" of EG - but it's not really much of a book without depending on Ender's Game.
Shadow of the Hegemon and Shadow Puppets tell the story of Bean and Ender's brother Peter. I can't say very much that is good about these books, unfortunately.

The long and the short of it, is that they're all decent reads - but Ender's Game and Speaker for the Dead are as good as any of it ever gets, IMHO. The rest of it is just to be read/listened to - if you really, really want more Ender.
