View Full Version : Should I ditch my Palm Z22 for an iPod Touch?

Ultimately what I'm looking for is a good calendar that will keep me organized and on track. I'd also like a "to-do" list. My Palm has all of these and I like it, but the iPod Touch is really enticing with all its new Apps (and even the ability to choose which To-do apps I want). Plus its extras like Maps, Videos, Music, etc are great.
I already have an iPod Classic 80 GB that I love so it won't be entirely for music. I love my Palm but if the iPod does it better I'll drop the $229 for the 8GB. But if you guys feel it's not worth it to get rid of my trusty Palm I'll consider holding onto the thing, since it's what I use and I like it.

Well, you already have an iPod so I would hold out on getting an iPod touch now. The iPod touch can never replace a PDA. However, there are many people out there that aren't power users. A power PDA user browses the internet over wi-fi, edits/views Word documents on the go, edits/views Excel files on the go, has an in-depth calendar, and has a bunch of contacts. Normal PDA users may find that an iPod touch is suitable. I have an HP iPaq and had an iPod touch but I was still constantly using my iPaq for everyday use. I have since purchased a netbook offering me a solid 6.5 hours of real world usage on a single charge.
Either way, I think you should wait. The new/updated iPod touch models are just around the corner as Apple will have an iPod event in September-October. You might as well wait the 4 months and see what Apple plans on offering. Your current iPod and PDA can definitely hold you over until then. The main reason why I suggest waiting is that Apple may do away with the 8GB model and have 16GB be the minimum storage. This would also mean that a new/updated 16GB iPod touch would come in at a low price.

I did exactly what you want to do. I switched from a Palm Z22 to a 16 gig iPod Touch. I received it for my birthday last month. If I were you, I would wait until the new iPhone software, version 3, is released in June. The upgrade to will cost current iPhone and iPod Touch users $10. When the new iPhone software is available I will be one of the first to upgrade.
I love the calender function of the iPod better than the one on the Z22. However, the notes are not as useful because they don't sync with the computer. That, along with the addition of cut, copy and paste, will make the iPod Touch as good as the functions on the Z22. There are lots of free to-do list applications on Apple's iTunes store, but I bought the upgraded version of To-do. It syncs with my iCal calender to-do list on my Mac, and it will sync with a free web application called Toodledo. It will also do a lot more than the software on the Z22 such as setting up project to-do lists. It cost $10.
The other features of the iPod Touch will blow the Z22 out of the water. I watch movies, TV shows, listen to podcasts, music and I surf the internet via WiFi. I can send and update my e-mail when I am on WiFi and sync my calender. I also download news stories from the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times and U.S.A. Today which I read during my lunch hour.
I also have a first generation 4 gig Nano that I still use when I just want to listen to music. After four years its battery is getting a little weak. But, the iPod Touch is my primary information and entertainment center. Go for the iPod Touch in June and consider getting the 16 gig. The extra memory will be worth the extra money when you start downloading applications and movies.

You can sync notes with 3.0
I also say wait for the 3rd gen', rumor seems to be the prices stay the same but capacity bumps in each catagory. 8gb will be 16gb, so double storage and better preformance, win win - and you have an iPod and PDA already so just wait out

I've found that the built-in calendar app on the iPod Touch does not compare to the Palm's! One of the biggest irritants is that an event alert vanishes when you unlock the IPT! There is no subtle, flashing icon alerting you to an event as there is on the Palm. Plus, that means that there is no way of snoozing the event either! The calendar does NOT use an accordion display as the Palm does-- where it collapses the hours where there are no appointments. I could go on, but you catch my drift. Apple simply hasn't managed to do justice to calendaring and lags behind the Palms of even 10 years ago!
And it doesn't even come with a todo manager, but as a previous poster mentioned, the inexpensive To-do app by Appigo is a winner-- clean, fast, elegant, a tour de force.
I switched from a Palm T3 and SONY TJ37 to make the IPT my daily device. I'm living with its calendar limitations because it has so much more to offer-- especially, for me, in the ebook and podcast departments.
Personally, I would wait until September when the next iteration of the IPT is expected. Who knows? It could even get a camera!
Good luck with it! They are wonderfully addicting devices.

Astroman makes a good point. The calendar on the iPod Touch is not as powerful as the Palm calendar. Also, I liked that American Airlines' downloadable flight schedule would automatically update on my computer and allow me to insert my flight data directly into the calendar from the schedule. However, the Palm software has been around for several years and large companies, like American have not converted their applications to the iPhone platform yet. I guess an E-mail to AA might get them busy.
I also agree that the other features of the iPod Touch far outweigh the features on the Palm.

I converted from a Zire 72 to a 16GB Touch. There are things about my Palm I really miss: the ability to select text and copy and paste it; HandyShopper (there is just no iPod app alternative); being able to configure the GUI; no grafitti or external keyboard to enter data faster. Some days I think I should have kept the Palm. But Apple does know how to do media: music, video... all very slick on the Touch. Not crazy about how I have to use iTunes for everything though.

The new just released iPhone OS 3 (for IPT, too) now includes a spiffy implementation of cut/copy/paste. I've used it many times already!
Have you looked into Appigo's ToDo app? Or HanDBase? They are configurable (HDB is even "programmable") and you could end up with something that can have many of the features of Handy Shopper (of course, alternatives are never fully satisfying, but you might be surprised by additional features that HS doesn't have!).
