View Full Version : 20GB iPod 3G with Windows ME
Hi, My friend just bought my 20Gb 3G iPod off me, but he can't get it working because he has Windows ME. He went to apple.com and downloaded an ME updator but that didnt seem to do anything. What does he need to do to make it install OK on his ME computer.
thanks

Your friend certainly can use the iPod with Win ME. There's a sticky in the Windows forum that explains everything. Basically the instructions for 98SE also apply to ME. I use Ephpod instead of iTunes on my ME machine.
Its not iTunes thats he problem. Before he even gets to he iTunes install, when he is installing the ipod it says you cannotinstall it. XP and 2000 are required. (Something along those lines)

He needs to isolate the updater.exe program and run that if he needs to update the firmware on the pod. Since he bought it from you it probably has software on it, doesn't it?
If windows recognizes it as a drive then load ephpod and away you go...
Really, the sticky at the top of this forum has everything you need to know.

Right, Windows ME should recognize iPod without running/installing any updaters. I believe that new iPod out of box comes with the latest 2.1 firmware, so the updater is useless. I was amazed how easy i could use iPod on Me.
When you tried to install the iPod using the CD, didnt it tell you that it requires XP or 2000?

Yes. The cd will tell you that. You can't use itunes either.
The thing is that i read the thread on how to setup the Ipod using 98 or ME, and I tried it, but it didnt do anything. I opened setup.exe, but didnt go any further than the welcome screen. I then searched for and opened the updater. I ran that, and after install it told me to restart the computer. (Was I supposed to have the ipod plugged in when running that updater because I didnt). after install it told me to restart the computer. After restart, the computer was no different. I can go into my computer and the removable device and see my ipod, but all I want to do is be able to add songs and delet songs from it. the ipod used to my friends and it has software on it aswell as songs, and it still says Josh's Ipod on it.
i do not have firewire on my PC, so i bought a firewire to usb cable and plug the iPod in using the USB.
Does anyone know how to help me. I would really appreciate it.
Thanks in advance

Okay so you can see the removable device. That's step one.
Now get some software to load on the songs. Ephpod is free and it works with ME.
The thing is that I have tried using Ephod and nothing happens. the iPod is plugged into the PC using a USB to Firewire Cable, as the computer does not have any firewire ports??
