Hey,

I'm getting a new 15GB ipod sunday and I started correcting my ID3 tags via Windows media player 9. I heard that the iPod only reads ID3v2 tags. How do I check if my tags are ID3v2 and if its not, what program should I use to change them? Thanx for the help.

welcome to ipodlounge! :)

the ipod doesn?t only read id3 v2 tags. it also reads v1 tags. we usually recommend you using v2 tags, because they serve more purpose than v1 tags (give you more characters for longer song titles, customizable genres...). search for info concerning tagging programs by using the search feature on the top. as an example id3taggit is very popular. drTag is another program that does it?s job well. with these progs you can wipe out v1 tags in seconds (great for large music libraries).

no the ipod doesnt read any sort of tags. it reads data from its database. it just depends on what tags the program your using to transfer stuff to the iPod supports.

alox and mrm are basically right. The iPod doesn't read tags, but the program you use to upload does, so what mrm was doing was just saving you from the gory details. ;)

Do what mrm says, use only v2 tags and delete v1 tags. I'd also recommend against using WMP as your tagging tool. Typically w/microsoft, they don't strictly adhere to the standard in every way and it can cause difficulties.

I like id3-tagit (www.id3-tagit.de, it's free) or you can tag in your iPod uploading program (MC9, MMJB). Ephpod and Xplay don't allow you to tag the files on your PC, just what's on the iPod.
