Here's what happened, I tried out the 3.0 beta and when I connected it to my computer and itunes said something about needing to register my ipod in the developers program. I ignored that for a while until I had time to figure out how to restore my ipod becuz that's the only screen I could see. Today when I connected my ipod to my computer a screen came up that said I could restore to a later date but when I tried it just froze my ipod. Now my ipod only goes to the "insert ipod into itunes screen" when I turn it on. Is there anything I can do to force restore it? I tried dfu mode a few times but it just turns on and goes to that screen and itunes says my ipod can't be connected due to some error.

For 3.0 right now, I think you have to have a developers account and then register your device number, or something along the lines of that, for iTunes to recognise it.
This seems to work (so it says), but there's other solutions and questions there too you can follow.

If I take it the Apple store, can they do anything about me downloading 3.0? Sure I'll look dumb for doing it but they can't/won't have me arrested or sued or anything right?

Try this:
1- Get rid of the 3.0 firmware (or move it to another folder or re-name it). The firmware has a file extension like ".ipsw" and the 3.0 version should indicate 3.0 in the name. If you're a Windows user, this file should be located at:
C:\Documents and Settings\(acct name)\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPod Software Updates
2- After getting the 3.0 file out of the way, do a force-restore of your iPod:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808
That should re-load the last (legal) version of firmware you had on your iPod.
