View Full Version : Can't Stop Push Email

I am using Exchange for my email but I can't stop the push email. I would rather have it fetch email every 15 minutes to save battery life. When I go into settings, I have the following set:

Under Fetch New Data - Every 15 Minutes
Push is turned Off
Under Advanced and then under my email account I have it set to Fetch.

I don't see any other place that I need to change but when ever I get an email on my desktop computer I get it immediately on my iPhone as well. I tried to set it to manual and that works.

Does anyone know what I might be doing wrong?

Thanks.

Hi and welcome to iLounge.

This might be a bug in the current iPhone version with regard to Exchange accounts. The Push ON/OFF setting definitely works for MobileMe and Yahoo accounts, but it may not work the same way for Exchange accounts.

Note, however, that you seem to be operating under an incorrect assumption: Push actually takes up less battery life in most cases, since the iPhone is not establishing a network connection unless there's actually new mail coming in. With a 15-minute poll, you're checking for new mail every fifteen minutes, whether there's new mail there or not. With "Push" enabled, your iPhone waits to receive a notification from the network that there's new mail, and doesn't establish a connection to check for mail unless and until it gets that notification.

Push could theoretically consume more battery life if you were getting a lot of e-mail (like more than one message every 15 minutes, every hour of the day), but for most people that's not the case -- daytime hours might be busy, but evenings and late night are generally very quiet so it balances out.
