I have recently purchased the CD of Zero 7's great new album
Unfortunately this is copyright protected - so effectivly my PC does not recognise a disc in the drive.
I understand the reasons for Copyright Control but I have purchased this CD for my enjoyment, I want to be able to have it on my iPod but am unable to.
(The same software is also on Kelis "Tasty" and Pet Shop Boys "Pop Art").
Does anyone know how I can get around this to enable me to put these three great albums on my iPod?

There is a whole thread on this at http://ipodlounge.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=4032.
I can tell you what the best way to do it is, but your probably not going to like it. The easiest, but it costs way, is to get a LiteOn or Plextor DVDrom drive. I've been dealing with copy-protected CDs for about two years, and my LiteOn drive has never failed at ripping one.

Ouch! Not the simple response I was expecting!
Thanks for the response

Well, that is the simple response. The rest involve sharpies, post it notes, or programs that copy the disk.
All of these are too much work, for me, so I just throw a drive at it. Now I put the disk in, and play or rip.

I ripped it fine with CDex.

works every time
EAC is a good suggestion, blindwrite might be useful to you also. http://www.vso-software.fr/products_english.htm

:(
Sadly Blindwrite did not work oon my system (could not find the drivers ever after separate installation)
ExactAudioCopy simply produced blank wav files...
Looks like I will have to try and find CDex - anyone have a link?
I love CDex!
You can really customize most of it, and its free and has CDDB features.
catch a download from this link:

have fun! :)
(Id love to have the Zero 7 cd, but I haven't got around to buy it yet - meanwhile; check out my friend's Zero 7 website @ www.zeroseven.tk !)

I'm not sure which CD copy protection the Zero7 album has, but a lot of people have joy with holding down the shift button when they insert the CD. Have you tried that?

Have done and that does not work - thanks though

I have never had a problem with Cdex to rip anything. In fact I run two copies at the same time so each or my drives are working on a cd. I'm curious as to why it ran soo slow on your machine?? Is it a slow machine? and old cd drive? If you have a burner, try ripping the cd,s from the burners platter... my burner rips 4x faster than my regular drive!!

No my machine isn't that old and everything else rips perfeclty well on it. At much greater speed.
I think it has more to do with the copyright software being effective and not my machine.

When a "music CD" won't play on your primary music playback system (a.k.a., computer), then you should return the defective (a.k.a copy-protected) disc. If they only offer you a replacement disc, take it back again the next day. Keep it up until they give in and refund your money. Speaking with your wallet (forcing them to deal with opened return items costs real money) is an excellent legitimate weapon for consumers to speak out against discriminatory copy protection schemes.
My other suggestion involved iTunes Music Store, but I see you claim to be in London. Sorry. Zero 7 - When It Falls is available from iTMS. All tracks too.

There isn't a problem with the disc. The software on the disc is doing it's job - it is stopping me from copying it.
It plays perfectly in an ordinary CD player or through the included app on the disc.
I am in London so I am unable to purchase on iTunes and to be honest I don't think I would want to - I want to physically own the album for personal reasons.

Has anyone else successfully ripped the whole album either into iTunes or something else?

Physically there isn't anything wrong with the disc, but any of the CDs with copy protection are not true Compact Discs... the trademark owners for CDs should go after distributors that use the trademark symbol for obviously altered format ;) These copy protected discs are definitely not Redbook compliant.
Return the disc a few times and then the store should give you your money back ;)

What reason should I give for returning the disc 3 weeks after purchase?
It works. They can prove that.
The copyright protection works - they can prove that too!
If I said I wanted to copy it I'd be had for fraud!

Got it! Got it! Got it!
Thank you!
The problem was with the built in cd player on the disc - this was loading and reading the first track which meant CDex stalled.
Hadn't spotted it before and now I have I can cancel it once the disc goes in (works indepdently for Windows Autoplay) and then I can rip away!
Anyone using these discs and have trouble then please make sure you cancel the auto CD :)
Am now working my way through Pop Art.
Thanks again :) :D

I can get these to rip using EAC and my Sony DVD burner. Using my Plextor cdrw doesn't really work that well. You should do copy & test to be sure you got a good rip. A few tracks had errors and I had to re-rip.

Of all the music I have completed this evening I have not had any errors (so far!) :)
